I have gastro and the usual recovery diet includes rice and dry biscuits. Simple carbs. And they say don’t eat fatty foods. Not sure what to eat! Any advice? I haven’t eaten white rice and biscuits for a long time! Can’t get my head around it.
Recovering from gastro
This is just prefix that can mean a lot of things stomach related. I assume you mean one of the variations of bariatric surgery? How long have you been on a ketogenic diet? There’s some very experienced people here on that subject. @Daisy has had the surgery, and has a friend who seems to be an expert on it. Maybe they can advise you. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery, sorry you had to take that step.
It doesn’t strike me as the usual post op diet for bariatric surgery. They pretty well always advise low fat because you know fat is the root of all evil right? Although my recommended diet at least was pretty high in carbs it wasn’t too bad. I would say “normal” sort of “healthy” diet plan. There is some variation too depending which op you have had, assuming it is bariatric surgery. Protein first is key regardless.
Assuming gastroenteritis.
This is the recovery diet as recommended by the Mayo Clinic’s web site:
Try to eat small amounts of food frequently if you experience nausea. Otherwise, gradually begin to eat bland, easy-to-digest foods, such as soda crackers, toast, gelatin, bananas, applesauce, rice and chicken. Stop eating if your nausea returns. Avoid milk and dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and fatty or highly seasoned foods for a few days.
Also:
From that site:
Foods to eat
- Pastas
- Rice
- Lean meats prepared with little fat
- Low-fat cooked fish
- Eggs
- Fresh fruits, or fruits canned in their own juice
- Cooked vegetables
- Sugar-free cereals
- Bread
If you tolerate them, you can also eat:
- Low-fat yogurt
- Low-fat cheese
I highlighted the entries in that list that also fit in with general low-carb eating. But it is important to get over your illness first, so if you need to eat some rice, eat some rice.
What is their reasoning for eating this way? The only thing I can think of is less digestion required!
Gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhea, is inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract—the stomach and small intestine. Symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Fever, lack of energy and dehydration may also occur. This typically lasts less than two weeks. It is not related to influenza, though it has erroneously been called the “stomach flu”.
Gastroenteritis is usually caused by viruses. However, bacteria, parasites, and funguscan also cause gas…
if assuming gastro…could be a lot of reasons this is going down in the body, and if nausea etc…then eating that bland food to hold down I guess is recommended. you know, grandma says eat crackers and sip ginger ale type thing LOL
I think clarifying ‘gastro’ from the poster from the original post is important.
assuming that the poster is sick. Needs just something easy to eat and soft on the tummy etc. to get by while they recover?
not sure on it so not suggesting anything yet LOL
What springs to mind as the best food to consume is bone broth if this is the problem and/or good old chicken soup.
This would actually also be great after bariatric surgery so win win!!!
