Recovering carb addict

OK, so I fell off the wagon big style, while on my summer holiday, The first three days were great. Then I allowed a dessert. Then an icecream the following day. And after that my snout was firmly in the carb trough.

My Freestyle Libre ran out 10 days in and I hadn’t taken my blood glucose meter with me, but I tested as soon as I got home and it was 12.6!!!

Naturally enough, I had planned that today - my first day back - would be a full fasting day to get back into ketosis ASAP, and then on with a very strict keto plan. As it happens, I spent the last couple of days of my holiday feeling lousy, with what has now been confirmed as a chest infection. Hence I am on antibiotics. Is that going to interfere with keto at all?

I used my ketnix this morning (after a carby first part of the day yesterday, but just a little Greek yogurt and walnuts in the evening), and my first result was zero, zip, nada. Just tried again (2.15pm) and have blown a measly 1ppm. Oh well, moving in the right direction!

It happens and sorry to hear that you actually got sick. I like to use these types of ‘events’ as a positive in that you have now learned what a vacation from keto feels like. It is negative reinforcement. It should help going forward.

Hope you are back on track before long and that you feel much better soon. The antibiotics may or may not interfere with ketosis (having an infection will as it creates stress) but it is unavoidable and you just need to concentrate on eating within your personal goals.

I did wonder whether the sudden influx of sugar had made me less resistant to nasty bugs.

I believe so. Here is an old study that might help to see why…White blood cells are the cells of our immunity.

Wow, good info, thanks.

Well, today has been more or less fasting - I’ve had tea with milk, and one glass of kefir. That’s it - no solid food. Not been difficult, because being ill puts you off your food anyway.

A week on… and more than 8lb down already

I started blowing reasonable ketones on day 4. There could have been some on day 3, but I spent that bouncing round different parts of the NHS and testing my breath was not high priority.

A few more days of normal (i.e. Keto) eating, and then my 6-day fasting window of opportunity opens. Husband is going away, so I can do it without fending off worried questions! I’m probably going to do a kefir fast, cos I’m making such a lot of it and it’s so deliciours and in any case I’m on antibiotics so I need me some healthy bacteria. With good luck and a following wind, I’ll shift a further 5lb and then be at a new low weight. And then onward…

Blood glucose improved rapidly on resumption of keto eating, and by day 4 was at “Diabetic? Who’s diabetic?” levels.

Keto rocks! You know it!
