Recommendations for a scale

(Jane Reed) #1

Several years ago I discarded a crummy scale and never replaced it. Now that I am keto-ing, I want to monitor my progress. I’m not the kind of person who has to anxiously check in with the scale every day. My body measurements are not changing noticeably so I want to check my weight.

Which scale do you use? Do you consider it reliable? Does it have the sensor for measuring body fat?

I get that home scales are imperfect; I just want one works pretty well.

@Buttonwillow I have a hand-me-down Withings scale, I love it! It syncs up to my phone (Apple Health) and my Lose It! app. All seven of my family members have a profile, and it know who we are when we weigh in!

I bought a “Greater Good” Scale on Amazon. I love it. I also have close friends that also have one. They have enjoyed theirs too. It seems very consistent with its reading, and I am glad I got it. I will put a link to the one I bought my friends bought the higher end model.

I have a Tanita, but the Omron scales have better reviews. The Tanita seems accurate on weight, but the measuring body fat varied and I don’t even do that anymore. I have one of the cheaper models.

We got a Yumani scale. IT connects to your phone to record your weight, bmi, and some other stuff. Not sure how accurate that other stuff is though.

Thanks for your replies, Ketonauts. I’ll check out all of them.

I prefer to use a tape measure. Measure neck, chest, stomach, waist, hips, upper arms and upper legs. Seeing these measurements go down is a much better indicator of fat loss than the scale.

So, even if you get a scale, I’d also get a tape measure.

sounds like a lot of work.

(Allan Misner) #9

Not really, I keep a cloth tape measure in my bathroom and can get my measurements in two minutes or less.

I just brought an Omron scales, but that’s not really important one of the main things is use the same scales, if you use different scales there could be variation of couple of kilos or more.
I used to be on a Terry Furguson diet and you would get weighed at different chemist the scales could vary a lot. So I learnt it’s the improvement you want so use one set.

I have the fitbit aria scale. I really like that it logs my numbers so I have years of data (kind of a data nerd). Fitbit also integrates with myfitnesspal, so I can see my progress easily. It does body fat by impedance

I have the same and it is fantastic. I also have a Fitbit programmed into the app! Saves a lot of time as I always forget to write down the results or forget where they are.

Scales are evil and lead to nothing but disappointment and frustration IMO. I want to lose FAT, not weight, therefore I measure fat loss via circumferential measurement and DEXA scans.

#14

True, but I think DEXA scans are more expensive than a scale. A scale is yet another tool, as long as you use it properly it can give you information.

#15

how exactly do you use it properly? all it tells you is your mass X the acceleration of gravity. it doesn’t tell you how much of the weight difference from a previous measurement is water, fat, muscle or feces.

#16

The scale I have tells you some of that. Not sure how accurate it is though.

You do your things, I’ll do my things.

I just bought a fitbit aria scale. Love it and it downloads results into my app. It will also sync with mfp. It shows weight, BF and BMI.

#18

I also use the Fitbit Aria and I’m happy with it, but I have nothing else to compare it to, so although I can’t claim that it is accurate in an absolute sense, I’m comfortable relying on it for tracking changes over time.

I have had a Withings scale for a few years and find it frustrating lately. I find that my weights go up and down by pounds each day. If I step on the scale a second time, I get a different reading. Not sure why this is happening, but I am quite frustrated and don’t trust it anymore. I weight myself daily as this keeps me accountable to my WOE. I was thinking of buying a FitBit Aria - thanks for the positive comments.

it may need new batteries

when i weigh i always weigh 3x…i’ve even weighed and then grabbed a bottle of anything handy to see if the scale reads differently

it’s not ocd…i just don’t trust the tool lol
