Well when you’re daughter goes off to college it’s time to clean out the pantry. I did this when I started keto about 1 month in. I am a bit of a disaster prep guy living on the central California coast (recent quakes were south of me), a few miles from the San Andreas Fault and a couple of smaller ones that intersect in Santa Cruz. I’ve been here so long often I don’t even notice the small quakes. We had a big one in ‘89 that trashed most of the historic buildings.

Anyway starting keto I filled seven large boxes with everything carb laden in my pantry and gave them to a friend who is an elder in the LDS church, they have a food bank. While I did feel a little bad about giving poor families all the food I decided was unhealthy junk, I thought hungry children would be better of with it than without.

I felt good doing something for others at the same time as making a commitment to change my life for the better. And it made it easier to stay with the program I had laid out for myself never looking back. I developed a mind set that those foods were basically poison that was rapidly leading me towards diabetes and an early death.

I have a 25 year old autistic son who needs me in his life as long as possible, he has no siblings. I was always worried and scared about what would happen to him when I am gone, and still do sometimes. But I’m doing everything in my power to make the goal of being here for him a long time. I just turned 60 and have been through many a health crisis which I won’t go into here. Keto is fixing most of my issues including looming depression and anxiety. I have lost 25% of my body mass in under a year and I am close to my goal weight. You can do this too!

I know ! While on keto I would go out with my buddies, have my one beer or one glass of wine, have dinner, leave, and drive to a Fast Food Joint, pick up hamburgers, Fries, and a Shake and enjoy them at home. It got so sad, that I actually told my friends that because of my diabetes diagnosis, I was going to quit drinking for two months to see if it helped me reverse this thing. You know what, I did quit drinking for two months, and I still went to Fast Food joints after my dinner with friends, and pigged out. It wasn’t the frigging alcohol making me do it, it was because I wanted it, and the alcohol gave me an excuse. So I continued keto, since January, and even though I was on and off, still lost 17 lbs over 5 months and finally said to myself, let’s see if I can go 4 weeks straight with < 20, then 1 more week, and now 6 weeks done. If this WOE makes you feel good your going to keep at it, so just don’t give up, and when you get off, get right back on, the sooner the better, but it takes time to figure out what works for you.

I went to an outdoor festival today. It was crowded and I was miserable. I had 1 Crispin and 1 Sangria. I finished the day at 37 total carbs. I need to remember how emotionally miserable I feel / felt to also help keep me on the straight and narrow. My doctor said I should try and lose weight first or I will need to go on high blood pressure meds. Right now I feel emotionally wrecked, but glad I didn’t cave into the donut or beer tent. Thanks you for your responses. I’m looking forward to feeling better.

Hi Libby. Just a quick question and I’m sure it’s been asked a billion times. Is it net carbs or total carbs suggested? I am trying to lose 50#s. I am using the Atkins app to track carb intake.

Thank you,

Well, I’m a seat of the pants Ketoian… hence just going mainly carnivore to avoid any mathematical confusion. Under 20 carbs, though. Depending on how you want to be about it… I mean, it depends on your quality of life issues. If you want to go really strict I’d guess total carbs. Most people would say net carbs is okay. Depending on one’s own individual body. Some people might be able to lose weight taking in a lot more carbs than that but a couple of people (people like me usually- older women-) say that if they don’t keep it close to zero there isn’t going to be any weight loss. Actually, I get body recomposition on keto but for actual weight loss I’ve had to resort to fasting. This will hopefully change.

To add, the reason I am hoping it will change is because at some point I will become as muscly as I should be given my activity levels (lately digging a ton of post holes with a substandard auger so it ends up being mostly manual post hole digger and then tamping the dirt back in with an astoundingly heavy metal tamper,) and then my body will decide to quit adding muscle and then maybe the loss of fat will be just that instead of making more muscle. If you see what I mean.

Hi Moo. I was wondering how you are doing? I am still in the on and off faze. Seems I can do best on week days compared with weekends.

Hi David. I keep thinking about what you said about taking care of ourselves so we can be around longer for our children. How are you and how is your son? My Mom died when she was only 65 yrs old. This still hurts. I’d like to be around longer for my daughter.

We’re just fine. I am getting a little burnt out. I’ve had him 12 days straight now and have him till Wednesday when his mom and her husband get back from Oregon and Washington. The forum keeps me sane, I haven’t had any other real interactions with non autistic people while I have had him here. We were up in the mountains today watering the garden at the cabin they live in. :cowboy_hat_face:

@David_Stilley Is it hard to get internet there in the cabin? I know when we lived up north, friends of ours that lived more in the country, couldn’t get it back then. They have it now, but still have issues at times, so just wondered. I am sure that Steven really enjoyed the time with you, and all of your amazing cooking; but I can imagine how it is tiring and a lot of work for you as well.

Hey Bull, things are going good. I’m 8 weeks in now without a break and obviously finding things easier and easier.

I went all of 2018 Jan to December in and out of keto, and about the longest I could go is two weeks, but a lot of the time I would just go weekdays like you. The diabetes diagnosis from my Dr. was a good thing, as it acted as my excuse to my friends for only having 1 beer instead of 2 or 3 with them, after golf, or at dinner. ( besides getting me motivated to drop carbs) It wasn’t the having a beer with friends which was the problem for me on weekends, but more the addiction to things that are sugary.

Just keep trying, I’ve even gotten into fasting now, how great is that, no meal prep, haha, no hunger whatsoever, Don’t give up, I know it’s frustrating, but some of us are little by little. Took me 3 years to quit smoking way back when, even though I quit every day.

Hey Bull, you may just have to bite the bullet one day, and become a little less social for a month and get this thing by the horns! Pick a good month and no one will notice.
