Rapid Weight gain after year in keto

(Heather ) #1

Hey all, I’ve been on keto for more than a year. I’m very passionate and always wanting to learn more. My weight Can always fluctuate up or down two pounds but for the last two weeks it seems to be rising really quickly. I’ve gained 7.5 pounds in two weeks. I blood test and my ketones have been fine the whole time and blood sugar slightly elevated and highest fasting (morning reading) was 92 usually in 80s. (When I’m very good it’s in the 60s but since it’s summer I’ve added berries and barbecued veggies). I guess I might just cut veggies and fruit all together for week to see if that helps. Im also worried it could be hormonal birth control which I think caused my stall 6 months ago, but that hasn’t changed recently. I sleep well and don’t think I have any increased stress. I usually Omad or have 2 meals a day. I do use artificial sweeteners in my coffee but I have the majority of the time I’ve been on keto. Should I cut the sweeters or cut the fruits/veggies? I want to do one thing at a time so I can find out the cause. On a side note when I ate blueberries and hour later my blood sugar went down to 77, so it seemed like it actually lowered my blood sugar shortly after a temporary rise over 100.

Hmm…that blood sugar swing for berries might be a problem. What was the reading before the berries? When I was wearing my continuous glucose monitor, it took something like ice cream for my blood sugar to go below what it started before a meal. Otherwise, meals caused my blood sugar generally to end where it started.

On the other hand, 7.5 pounds might just be a lot of water. Do you fast at all? If so, you could try a 3-5 day fast and see what happens at the end of that. When I went on vacation last year, I was pretty good the vast majority of time, though I did have a pizza and some ice cream…and gained about what you din, in a week. It took me a while to get it off.

I would personally cut out the fruits and veggies. I’m sure the sweetener isn’t helping either, but fruits and veggies affect me.

I went mostly carnivore about 2 months ago and that really helped out my weight loss. I kept it simple and ate the same thing almost daily. I decided to bring greens back in, and over a 2-3 week period I gradually gained weight. So I’m back to being mostly carnivore as of 1 week ago, eating the same simple meal and already down about 6.7 lbs just from doing that.

I have a big ribeye (I would estimate 10-14 ounces) and 1-2 eggs. And I say “mostly” carnivore because I also eat half an avocado, 2-3 feta-stuffed green olives, and a small chili pepper (I enjoy the burn), but a majority of my plate is steak and eggs.

I should also add that OMAD works best for me.

This is what I would suspect. If you’re eating vegetables and berries I wouldn’t jump to demonizing that if you’re keeping your carbs low they should fit in fine unless you’re eating too large of quantities, especially after one year of keto.

Blood sugar fluctuations are completely normal and I think people get hung up on trying to keep BG stable when our bodies just don’t work that way. You’re body will create glucose from dietary protein or fats if you’re not consuming carbs. Even if you eat a pure meat meal like just a steak there is insulin released to deal with that. Insulin is used for uncountable body functions and though it’s demonized in KETO we would die without it. It doesn’t just store carbs as fat but is necessary for transporting amino acids and nutrients into all of the cells in your body. The functions of glucose and insulin are oversimplified in most of our KETO brains. It’s when our diets are whack that insulin and glucose response gets dysfunctional and spirals out of control. KETO is about normalization of those functions.

It sounds to me like your readings are completely normal and at a healthy level. Your BG never got above 100, which is a healthy stable number. You’re levels are way below that. It’s fine for BG to rise considerably above 100 temporarily after eating as long as it drops back in range within a couple of hours. This is why I never test. Because without deep understanding of biology it’s just going to cause stress when you don’t truly understand what those numbers mean. By all means try a fast or a dietary tweak to get past a stall, but it sounds like you just took on 5 lbs. if 2 lbs. is within your normal fluctuations. It could just be water mostly. Women’s bodies do that. :cowboy_hat_face:

Have you taken a pregnancy test? My first pregnancy I was still getting periods and was on birth control pills…

But I think it could be the sweeteners and fruit as well. Our bodies change all the time, and what might have been okay before, could change!

Ice cream can cause it to go lower than when it started? Interesting almost like a hypoglycemic after hyperglycemic, I didn’t think of that. I’ll test again with the berries but I think they went to 105, sometimes my meals put me at 115 but usually drop down very quickly. If I eat Halo Top icream (before bed) my blood sugar will still be over 100 in the morning, that ice cream has some real sugar in it but is dirty keto-so I pretty much cut that out and now sometimes have Rebel (all monkfruit).

Oh okay, that is good. I just thought of it, so I thought I would mention it. I hope that you get your weight sorted soon, take care =).

If you’ve increased your carbs with some seasonal fruits and veggies, you may need to balance that with lowering your fat intake a bit to account for the increased blood sugar and insulin response. Also, depending on how much fruit you’re talking about, you could be eating enough sugar to increase your calories–also something you want to balance by dropping your fat intake a tiny bit.
