Random appetite

Anyone suffering from their appetite going from ravenous to non existent?

Been on the Ketogenic diet since the turn of the year, hit Ketosis pretty quickly and have managed to stay there ever since. Dropped the initial weight, got the flu, got the cramps, rode it out and got the energy, the reduced headaches the clear thought process… I love it, it’s the best thing I ever did for myself. Recently though (the last two weeks) my appetite has gone a little off key. I can go from ravenous to overly stuffed after just a couple of bites or a hand full of nuts! And I mean stuffed! Yesterday I skipped breakfast (I do this most days as I’m good with a butter coffee) then around 11:00 I was really hungry so made 2 Chaffles with cream cheese and salmon, half way through the first one my appetite completely shut down and I couldn’t face another mouthful, to the point where the thought made me gag. I didn’t eat anything further until 17:30 when I suddenly felt ravenous again out of nowhere, I grabbed a palm full of nuts and BAM appetite gone, I couldn’t face dinner at 20:00 which was chicken drumsticks and halloumi fries, I forced one drumstick down. It’s morning now and I couldn’t eat a single thing right now so back on the coffee! Oh I haven’t lost any weight but I dont actually need to but it’s odd as I’m hardly eating.

Anyone got any advice? Do I need to fast maybe?

TIA x

Hi there, I started on January the 1st and I can relate to everything you have said. It’s like I’m reading my own post. I was really hungry too at first and eating three meals a day. Then it became two and now im doing one meal a day. After two weeks of keto I started getting full very quickly too. I will be starving and cook up a nice big meal and after a few bites I will be getting really full. I’m as new as you so I don’t really have any answers. Could it be that our bodies now know when to signal to us when we are full?? You know, since cutting the carbs which raise insulin and make people hungry all the time. I’m two and a bit months in. Did you start the same time as me?? In January??. I hope you can get some good advice, I’m not the one to give it. But I can relate. I go 24 to 26 hours without eating. Apart from my one coffee with heavy cream in the morning. Anyway, just saying I can relate. Hope you get your answers. People are helpful here.

Hiya, thank goodness i’m not alone, I started on jan the 5th, I’ve really found it easy to stick to which is a shocker as I loved chocolate, cakes, biscuits etc… l’m quite lucky that I’ve never been a heavy person but I do work out quite a bit. I did this because i felt it was the healthiest way to be in control of my body as I get older and still eat real food.

Hopefully this is all part of the journey and we get some good advice, I’ve had loads of support here over the last few months, it really keeps me motivated knowing there’s people to lean on. I don’t talk about it with friends as all they see is someone who doesn’t need to diet, it’s too much to explain that it’s a lifestyle not a diet, but then I feel like in having to justify it! :woman_facepalming:t2:

Feel free to chat moving forward, it’s good to have someone mirroring experiences

Omg omg I can totally relate. I cop lectures ALL the time from family. I was very anorexic two years ago and recovered and gained some weight. I’m severely dismorpic it seems. I’m glad I’m not alone either. It’s lovely to see a newbie I can totally relate to. I have stopped telling family about it. I even fibbed to them that I’m not doing Keto anymore to get them off my back. :scream::scream:. Just was over the lectures. I don’t miss carbs and sugar. I’m 31 and I do crave them when I’m premenstrual but it’s only a flickering moment. I was meant to eat an hour ago.:joy:. See, just not very hungry. You seem cool Amanda. How long have you been on the forum?? If not for long welcome.. I think I joined on the 5th the day you started. :joy:. I’ve made some great friends on here.:heart::heart::heart:

P.s Yes, I’m all for chatting with you!!! I always worked out too. Not in a gym but I worked with racehorses and jogged everywhere or walked miles. I have had major surgeries on a perforated ulcer and also broke my back in a car accident at 22 so I don’t do as much now. But I’m still quite strong when I need to be because I worked those muscles for all my life. I grew up on a farm. Was a very active kid. I have another stomach ulcer now and I’m trying to heal that. Keto is great though. The food is yummy, even if I get full quick, at least I’m satisfied. I’m sure you can relate.

Odd but I experienced some odd things myself, I am far from being a newbie at this point. But I never had what you have know, being ravenous AND getting full easily, they never mixed in my life.
But I know that sometimes our body is a bit confused or something and it takes some time to have normal satiation/hunger signs again.
I wouldn’t fast if I were you as you do feel strong hunger. I eat when I am hungry. Yeah, it’s confusing to get full with a few bites but we will get hungry again eventually. 2 weeks a bit long to have this all the time but it seems, some people have this. Eating properly is important, I don’t worry about some days but not getting enough nutrients for a long time, that’s bad. My body always realize something is missing and I can eat a lot again. But keto “works” for some people “too well”… Try to eat some very nutritious food even if it’s not much. Maybe try various food choices to see what you can eat (I have some items I can eat almost any time. And there are times when absolutely nothing helps but that goes away quickly enough and it’s usually after a drastic diet change in my life. As I wrote, my body must be confused for a while…).
I have fat to lose though. Not eating enough longer term is more dangerous for you. Try things, really, you should eat properly. I would try food with various macros, drinking some of my calories… In the end I even would eat a bit more carbs if that keeps me from starving… I would focus on my protein intake and getting most of the necessary nutrients.
Do you exercise? Maybe that helps a bit, it does for some people for sure.

Hi shinita,
Thanks for the reply.
I love my food and eat a wide variety, I do exercise regularly, we are a very active and health conscious household. It may just be a phase my body is going through, im not worried as such, I know I’m healthy as I had a full body MOT at the beginning of the year before I started this. It’s just something I have never experienced before, so I’m hoping others have and it will pass.

Just forced in scrambled eggs (2 eggs) with spinach, cream cheese, heavy cream and a chopped tomato! Made by my youngest for mother’s day so I couldn’t refuse. I feel uncomfortable now though. :weary:

I hear ya there!!! I just had dinner, 100 grams of chicken, some lettuce, asparagus and a bit of cheese. I couldn’t eat the cheese. I’m very very full.:joy::joy::joy:

About 8 months in, I alternate. Sometimes I am overly hungry, sometimes easily sated. Sometimes I forget to eat meals, sometimes I have the urge to snack in between. I may be different though, because I have dropped a lot of weight (80 pounds) and my body goes through phases of losing and stalling while adapting to the new me (tightening skin, re-distributing weight etc.) I play it by ear, since with a huge loss of weight, you have to watch out for your metabolism.

There was a long phase a few months back though when I consistently had one or two meals a day and always felt sated.

Hi Amanda, This makes me think that maybe your appetite is sometimes stimulated by the idea of eating, but maybe not true hunger. Then you say this later,

If you don’t need to lose weight and you’re only doing KETO for energy and mental clarity and health then you will have days when you’re ravenous if you’re under eating sometimes. You may not have a lot of body fat to supply energy if you’re close to a healthy weight. You will settle into a groove in maintenance that works if your appetite hormones are functioning properly. You mentioned forcing some chicken, generally forcing yourself to eat because of a mealtime on the clock is a bad idea. If you work on eliminating snacks mostly and eating enough at meals your schedule will become more predictable as your body creates a new meal clock. It seems to me even though it’s recommended not to eat by the clock our bodies naturally settle into meal schedules anyway. It sounds like you’re doing just fine. You’re still adjusting to it all. :cowboy_hat_face:
