Rampant misinformation on Facebook groups

(Kirk) #22

I gave up Facebook in January. It’s just bad carbs for the brain.

(Sophie) #23

8+yrs for me. I guess I’m anti-social because I don’t find FB to be worth the virtual paper it’s typed on.

(Bella) #24

Hi Sophie,
Anti-social - no way I think quite the opposite.
I had enough of being with friends/family trying to have a conversation or just enjoy the moment when all they kept doing was checking FB.

Also, FB caused a couple of family arguments which still have not repaired.

(Sophie) #25

I couldn’t deal with all the DRAMA. period. Some people feed on it but I find that life is too short for that crap.

(matt ) #26

Hi Is this taken from a public part of the group? If its private it should not be shared here.

(Bella) #27

I totally agree.
I also find more positivity and creativity using pinterest and instagram, but even they are not a substitute for real life engagement with people.

Not that I am not happy to be here!

Ahhhhhh … I’d recognise that pinned post of endless rules anywhere! It seemed like a fun FB group to be in at first, but the judgy finger-pointing and piling-on got way too much for me after a short while and I had to get out to save my sanity.

Now from what I’ve seen lurking in these forums recently, this is a much kinder, friendlier and more open environment to share and learn - so I just joined up (yay! this is my first contribution!).

Welcome!

(Shayne) #30

I have removed myself from many a Facebook group after reading the dogmatic posts. I’ve even been banned for life from another forum for not following the very strict rules about posting.

(Doug) #31

Wow, Shayne, you must have done some really bad stuff.

(Shayne) #32

yeah… I disagreed with the owner about something I can’t even remember now. I’m sure it’s been over a decade since the “rebellion”.

A bunch of us got banned at the same time. We were welcomed to our own section of someone else’s forum for a while, then one of us got our own forum but he was really too busy to maintain it and it got glitchy, so we have a secret Facebook group now.

We’ve known each other for nearly 20 years now and I’ve met exactly one of them in person.

They’re part of the reason I still have Facebook - since I unfriended most of my family.

(Diane) #33

Made me smile!

(mags) #34

Oh well done!! I hate book of faces with a passion. Full of attention seeking show offs. This forum is wonderful.

(Doug) #35

I think the online experience makes us “more of who we are,” i.e. for better or worse strong characteristics will come out, often aided by total or partial anonymity.

The lack of perceived body language and voice inflection can also lead to misunderstandings - so many times I’ve seen two people get mad at each other - it’s like a ping-pong ball going back and forth in escalation.

It’s not unusual to have administrators let their egos get involved too much, too. This is where Richard and Carl are absolute saints. :slightly_smiling_face:

(Brian) #36

I haven’t found many Facebook groups I wanted to stick around long on, even ones like Dr. Fungs.

As for the one the OP mentions, that’a a party I can miss. Thanks, but no thanks. I’ve got way better ways to spend my time.

(Edith) #37

I am feeling fortunate that I found this forum on my first try and I have no reason to find any others. :grinning:

#38

amen to that! I’m in another group that’s directed at women and the admins keep telling women to eat huge amounts of fat, even though the women are gaining weight rapidly. it’s driving me nuts.

(Gabe “No Dogma, Only Science Please!” ) #39

Oops! Fixed.

It did. Both times I did it. It just didn’t show what is predicted by keto dogmatists: that most LDL was large and fluffy. My results were more complex and though I haven’t profoundly changed my diet because of it, I’ll keep an eye on it in the long term. My calcium score is zero so I have a lot of leeway to play around right now.

I’m not disagreeing with you; I still eat low carb (though I’ve been lax recently because I’ve been dating and therefore drinking way too much, making me feel ew) and I don’t think carbs are good for us. THAT much seems quite clear.

As for saturated vs monounsaturated fat: I don’t see any conclusive evidence. We don’t know ANYTHING when it comes to nutrition. It could be that lots of people can handle loads of saturates but that some people respond very badly to saturated fat. In general I see a lot of uncertainty and disagreement about lipids, and I wouldn’t ever counsel anyone to IGNORE a crazy high LDL result. I think doing so would and should be malpractice even for a LCHF doctor. It could turn out 50-100 years from now that we find out LDL is irrelevant, but I don’t think that’s been proven.

I guess what I’m really saying is that I’m on your side about meat and eating animals; it’s just that I am not fully convinced that a keto diet heavy in seafood is exactly the same as a keto diet heavy in red meat. I consider the jury out on this, and if I had any questions about my bloodwork, I’d have no trouble switching to a more fish-heavy diet to err on the safe side.

PMing you the link. You can decide, let me know and I’ll remove the quote.

Having said that, the group has a quarter of a million people in it. None of what’s in there is really private; they approve anyone. The reason they keep it closed is so they can exercise power and control over people IMHO.

(Gabe “No Dogma, Only Science Please!” ) #41

Agreed, but in all fairness I run a group or two and I’ve deleted a post only once in the better part of a decade.

Admins who act like douchebags, are.
