Quick sanity check of blood ketones test

(Magnus Jensen) #1

I have been fasting for 20 hours and measured 0,5 mmol/L KET and 4,3 mmol/L blood sugar on my Freestyle NEO. How would you interpret these readings? I have been eating LCHF for about 4 weeks, exercised every day and hit my Keto macros every day. Am I in ketosis and I do not feel hungry ever anymore, could I also be fat adapted? I have a lot of energy also when working out.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

You are in ketosis at this point, or else you would be dead, lol! Lack of hunger is not a sign of fat-adaptation, but rather a sign that your insulin level has dropped low enough for your satiety signaling to work again.

You will be glad to know, however, that having a lot of energy while working out is one of the signs of fat-adaptation. At four weeks, it is a bit early to be fully fat-adapted, so if you feel good now, I suspect you will soon feel even better. Enjoy the process!

Baring in mind everything you’ve said, I’d say they are about right. You’re obviously doing ok, just carry on till something changes.

Just following up on this with a measurement from this morning:
KET: 0.8 mmol/L
Blood sugar: 4.8 mmol/L

My question is why do my KET values decrease?

Now I have been fasting for 36 hours and intuitively I would expect the ketones in my blood to increase.

Any explanation would be appreciated so I could learn something from this.

Your body is probably starting to just produce the ketones it needs. FWIW, people’s ketone numbers vary pretty widely so you may not see numbers as high as you’re expecting - it doesn’t mean you’re not in ketosis.
