My story started back in 2014. I am 6’ 2" tall and had gotten up to 228 lbs when my son poked my belly and asked “when is it due”. I started caloric restriction combined with running 30 miles a week. By September 2014 I got down to 173 lbs. From that low I stated gaining again until I reached 207 lbs on July 10th 2018 and started Low Carb High Fat or Keto. By November I was down to 184 again and then put 6 lbs back on over the holidays. I started carnivore mid March and now back to 184 lbs. I don’t stress and I don’t restrict so I would call this way of eating “easy”. So yes a few ups and downs but staying in a fairly narrow window.
Question for 1 yr + Ketoer's
I started 1/1/14. This was 6 months after being diagnose with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. Basically, my heart was getting bigger for no reason they could ascertain.
I continue to lose weight and gain muscle. This winter, I had to buy a new winter coat and also new pants. I have lost over 50 pounds, though it’s hard to tell exactly how much since I’m also more muscular. I am no longer obese but still overweight by BMI, but I’ve always been overweight by BMI, even when I could see all the veins in my arms and each muscle in my quadriceps when I was younger. BMI does not account for muscle. I used to be a pseudo-bodybuilder, so I’ve always been somewhat muscular. Never got to the point where my muscles had muscles, but got fairly close. (No drugs, ever, though.) Took a measurement of my flexed right arm the other day – 15 inches, which is not bad, considering I now have a “monocep” (they cut a tendon for the small muscle in my biceps).
Oh yeah, I don’t use the scale. I find it useless. One reason is here (DEXA scans):
This was after shoulder surgery. Gained almost 4 pounds of muscle, lost about 6 pounds of fat…in a year. Meanwhile, if I fast, I can lose 5+ pounds in a day, or gain that back once I’m done fasting. The daily scale changes far outweigh what’s really happening.
Try increasing your saturated fat, by a lot. I was always cold until I did that. Now, I burn up.
Hey Bob, Yea, the BMI index is retarded. Eleven years ago I started out as almost “morbidly obese” at 300 lbs at 6ft. After losing 125 lbs and getting down to my lowest weight of 189, my BF % was still quite a bit higher than it ended up… I was still like a lot of fat, and very little muscle. I looked like crap, but I dipped just barely below “overweight” to “normal” for a few weeks. So at “normal” I was in horrible shape.
After 5 years of hard core working out 6-7 days a week, I was up to 225 @ 11% BF. I had lost a lot more fat, but had out on 45 lbs of lean muscle. Never been in such fantastic shape in my life. At that point, by the BMI index, I was very overweight again, and heading towards obese ! Yes right. I sure wish I could have made it to obese again… That would be like 245 @ 9% BF. I’d love to be “obese” like that
245 at 9% is getting into bodybuilding territory. Of course, that’s the way I remember them (I think Arnold competed at 235 or so), but I think they are way beyond that now.
Sounds like you’re doing well.
I’m Keto 2.5 years, started at 217 pounds, down to 139, now average around 153 pounds. The gain has been in lean body mass and I’m fine with that. I have an ambitious gym routine and focus on calorie balance, intermittent fasting, 3 full meals a day, no snacking. And filling out! I suspect it will take even another year to rid myself of my lower belly fat.
I’ve worked from home the whole time. I dont eat any replacement foods meaning mostly meat and dairy, regular dark chocolate (100% cacao) and coconut oil.
I binge occasionally and really enjoy it! My carbs are otherwise way less than 20 a day…
Started Keto the last week of July 2016. Reached my goal weight in May 2017. I have only gone above my original goal weight on 3 days, I do weigh in daily, just my need to track it after a life time of dieting. I often go up to 8 lbs. under it. It can depend on meds I might have to take, sinus issues pop up and before keto/lchf I could gain 10 lbs. in a week when I had to take the meds. I have had to take this this spring but I am staying under my goal weight. I do some fasting, mostly IFing, but 36-48 hrs a couple of times a month and the monthly Zornfast are part of my WOL now. I can eat up to 50 g of carbs and have no issues, but mostly my days are around 20 grams. I stopped tracking early on, just learned what and how much carbs to eat to work for me. My snacks, which are rare are boiled eggs or nuts, Macs, pecans or walnuts. I like wine and have it a couple of times a week. I also like very dark chocolate and I have that whenever I want and have no issues. I walk and so some strength training, but this last couple of months, it has only been walking and some yoga at home. I got sick before the stay at home phase.
I am doing fine.
I used to be cold all the time too, until I stopped fasting completely for several months, stopped counting / tracking and just ate whatever (keto obv.) and whenever I wanted. Now maintaining effortlessly and never feel cold (unless it’s really is cold).
