Question about MCT powder

(KM) #1

I usually put a tablespoon or two of MCT oil in my morning coffee, both for the energy/ketones, and as a bit of a laxative. I don’t want to travel with it, as it tends to leak no matter how hard I try to contain it. (No idea, but I’ve never gone anywhere that I don’t wind up with a ziplok bag full of mct oil that slowly gets all over everything else.)

Does anyone have experience with MCT powder? Does it have the same laxative effect? Does it add more or less the same taste / non-taste to coffee? I do want my ketone boost, but I’m always stopped up when I travel, so the anti-constipation factor is important to me.

Stevia bottle, remove label, pop top of bottle, dump stevia, rinse, fill with MCT. Never had one leak

Other than the “dump stevia” part, this sounds like a clever idea. Perhaps wait until it’s empty?

Pure liquid stevia extract is rather pricey, so this seems like disposing of the baby instead of the bathwater. :man_shrugging:

Your choice, we save empty bottles

MCT oil is just weird. Maybe it’s the size of the molecule or maybe I’ve just had bad luck with my containers but it Always leaks, whether it’s a screw-on container or a flip cap. I’d rather not travel with any liquid I don’t have to.

Perhaps this form has something to do with the laxative effect you’ve experienced? If so, powder form might not produce that result.

FWIW, we find (the powder form of) magnesium citrate keeps the digestive system moving. Might be an easier supplement to bring along on a trip.

Can you get the same MCTs in oil and powder? I am using two different MCT oils, one is all C8 and C10; and one has those and C12. C12 (lauric acid) supposedly has more antibacterial properties, which is why I started using all three.

In large amounts it can still have a laxative effect, but it takes a lot more vs oil, and works much better in drinks since it’s instantized and mixes in normally.

#10

Yup, usually come in either the normal mix, or C8 only.

Thanks. This powder I have is the same brand as my oil, nutiva, doesn’t mention the composition so I’m assuming straight 8. Gonna try it … Hopefully not leave a teeny tiny trail of two mouse poops in every public toilet in the PNW.

I have used the Quest brand of MTC oil powder. on and off for the last 5-6 years. Seems it is always sold out. I can consume more MTC without the dijesive stress. It’s great in coffee. It does contain milk. Less anti-constipation with the powder. Try a glass of cold water with a pinch or two of Redmond salt and then the coffee/MTC. Always works for me without fail.

Not sure where you live but my local stores sprouts and Whole Foods carry single serving bulletproof brand mct. That could work. Likely on Amazon as well.
