Protein help

Is it ok to eat your bodyweight worth of protein if you offset it with more fat?

(Brian) #2

If you would, spell out your question in a little more detail. I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking. (?)

For example: if someone is big into bodybuilding, they weigh 200 pounds. Can this person eat 200g of protein if they add more fat to their diet to keep the 75%/25% ratio of fat and protein.

You can calculate your daily protein by your Lean Body Mass.

Here:

I appreciate that but still doesn’t answer my question

(Anthony ) #6

Is that still too much protein is what I’m asking

(Pete A) #7

You’re right and my understanding is fat to satiety, although I don’t know if keeping your macros straight will negate any negative effects of “too much” protein (if there are any). Now I’m curious!

In my mind it makes sense. Everywhere I’ve read it says watch your protein levels but if you up your fat levels why would it matter. Hopefully someone can answer this.

If you want 200g of protein that would be 800 calories of fat. To add another 2400 calories doesn’t sound bad per se for a big healthy chap.

Others could well correct me but the body doesn’t work on % but rather absolute amounts. Grams of carbs impact on the pancreas is the most obvious example. Most people don’t need 200g of protein for lean mass retention but as long as you are body building I don’t see why not. If gluconeogenesis is demand driven then you shouldn’t make much more glucose due to the protein and since you are not diabetic (I assume) you aren’t worried about insulin response to protein then go for it. There is a secondary debate on what form of protein - whey is very insulinogenic.

Check out the Wittrock over feeding experiment. Personal trainer eats 3500 calories of pure fat for 21 days and gained no body fat or worsened his blood work as long as he stuck to his 20g (probably could have eaten more).

I find if I try and eat lower amounts of protein I am ravenously hungry even if I eat more fat. Sometimes eating a higher amount of protein might be beneficial.
