Problem with protein

(Guardian of the bacon) #21

109 lbs = 50kg. I would error on the high side. aim for 50-60g

I calculated todays calories at 1136

Are you weighing and measuring or guestimating. No big deal, I mostly guestimate but it is easy to be off.

Meals look pretty good. Snack may be easiest thing to adjust. When you can get by without snacking that will be good. Aim for fattier lower protein snacks. Avocado, olives, a slice of cheese with butter, spoon of coconut oil.

I’ll be honest, I’m mostly guesstimating the portions. I’ll try those snack options! I’ve been on keto since last Tuesday and this is the first day I’ve actually felt true hunger between meals. So I’m hoping that goes away soon, but I thought it may have been because of too much protein. I really appreciate the advice!!!

All your have to do is switch to metric units and it gives you all the relevant info.

Are you working out the protein content of the meat and cheese you are eating or with an app?

I’m using an app called ā€œLose Itā€ where is breaks down each day like this:

I was doing it the old school way with an actual calculator in my grubby little palm. :scream:

I would do your best to keep it under 100g for now but that is as far as I would worry until you are fat adapted or at least well into keto. Also, I would use this time to be accurate with your measuring. I know it is a ball ache but if you do it for a little while (and it really doesn’t take that long) you will get a pretty accurate feel for how much a portion is. I would find a container for veg that you then know how much weight a cup full of cabbage is (or whatever). Use your palm or no of slices to get a standard portion size that you know the weight of. Test yourself after a few days and see if your guestimates are accurate or not. After a few weeks, it will all come naturally to you AND you will be getting to a point where you will know if you needs to start adjusting things or not.

You really can simplify things in the early days. I know you probably just want to get it right but your appetite and tastes could change so much in a few weeks, it would have been wasted anyway.

You are doing really well. Don’t give yourself needless headaches. x

More fool you!

Add more fat! Eat more bacon!

I’m new and concerned I won’t be able to keep my proteins low also, as we are seaside creatures here, so I usually eat a LOT of fresh fish, and out of love of them I also eat a lot of prawns, a lot of eggs, and a lot of meats, even if not in large volumes, more than I’d suggest the ā€œaverage womanā€ would.

My LBM suggests I should be eating between 50-75g of protein. I’ll be happy if I can keep it under 100g in these early days, as I think it’s more realistic until I’m adapted, and am focussing very much on just replacing carbs with fats and increasing my fats in general.

I just added tonight’s steak to my macro counter, and after doing so, I have 12g of protein left for the day. Given I’ll snack on cheese, and have cream in my coffee later, it’s probably unrealistic to stay under 75g for me just now. Perhaps you’ll find a similar happy compromise without jeopardising the carb load/fat ratio you’ve built on.

I’d also love to know how you’re going now, 3 more weeks on, Casey

You are probably doing this, but I will ask just in case, because I have seen people make this mistake before. Grams of protein doesn’t equate to grams of food. So, 100 g of beef steak, or 100 grams of salmon, does not equate to 100 g protein. Could this be an issue?

Also, a second tip: Sometimes what you have to do is ā€œfat floodā€ your food. For example, imagine the gravy boat on your dinner table as shown below full of melted butter (possibly spiced with garlic, or fresh herbs, or just plain salted butter). If you pour the melted butter on a filet of fish or on a seafood medley, you will likely be satiated with a lot less protein.

Ha! Soooo I took a huge hiatus but I’m back and starting over…1.5 weeks in…still eating too much protein but I’m just letting my body do what it needs to do for the first few weeks and then adjusting.
