Wow! I was so worried about the title. But meh! You know me- I tend to freak out about stuff and write long posts impulsively. So here’s the deal: I have been travelling a lot lately. And what that means is no keto food for at least a day. That itself is bad. I don’t like cheating. I don’t like carbs. Not only am I bloated if I cheat I feel mentally exhausted. But I’ll be travelling again next week. Two days of 16 hours of train journey. With people who are deeply suspicious of keto and think that I’m part of some secret religious organisation and am slowly killing myself. They will literally force feed me and tell me how everything in moderation is important: sugar, black forest pastries, Thai noodles, spicy fritters, puffed patties and carbonated drinks. Everything is required, in moderation - (?) and they’ll go on and on about how I’m damaging all my organs at a go. I’ll deal with the negativity. Don’t worry. But, here’s the deal: what food would I carry? You have to remember that I don’t have an oven, I don’t have access to bacon, pork rinds, packed keto food etc. Can you suggest me some dry keto food on the go that I may be able to carry for 3-4 days? I’m assuming I’ll survive on eggs and chicken during my stay in Darjeeling. But I’m worried about my return journey- as I’ll be stuck in a train with no keto food. I won’t be able to bake/make anything while I am in Darjeeling as I’ll be staying in a remote cottage in a tea garden. Help. I don’t want to end up eating crap and feeling miserable.
Prevent me from Cheating!
I cannot really say for India but here it goes.
Macadamia nuts are excellent for me on a trip.
hard boiled eggs?
can you find some smoked/cured sausages?
chocolate
pickles?
canned meats
canned fish
I am jealous Darjeeling is one of the few places in asia-minor I would like to visit.
Darjeeling is soooo beautiful! Though I’m going there for work, it’s actually going to be like mixing business with pleasure. Yes, I guess hard boiled eggs would be a good option. I’ll carry packed salami, sausages and meatballs (no gravy, low carb). The sad part about the chocolate is that none of the Indian companies make dark chocolate which are more than 70% dark- so the only option is buying Lindt online which is very very expensive, when converted to our currency. I make simple chocolates at home with coconut oil, but they melt super quickly. I won’t be able to carry them. I think I’ll also carry some kimchi if I manage to make them or at least, some cucumbers for salad. Do you do whey protein powder? I’m not sure how good that is, but I’m obsessed with them because I don’t get to buy coconut flour or almond meal here, so an unflavoured whey protein saves me while making a savoury crepe or cheese biscuit. I also replace complicated keto desserts with a scoop of flavoured ones with stevia.
I do use protein powder, I buy the cheapest stuff I can find which also normally has the least carbs per serving. I don’t use it regularly but I use it as a quick meal replacement if I am low on time or food. I make millk shakes with it in my ninja, I use ice, HWC, coca powder, almond/coconut milk, and maybe some nuts or peanut putter. I have noticed that different flavors have different levels of carbs and protein in the same brand. For some people whey may be insulin spiking but at least I have not seen any issue or been concerned about it, I am not a T2D. I use stevia but I have lost a lot of desire for sweet things once I fat adapted, my biggest use of it is the zevia soda.
Can you get cocoa powder? I make my fat bombs out of it and coconut oil so I understand the melting aspect(I am still at -3 C or 28F so I literally let my fat bombs set up outside) but I think with a little research and thought you could make something, maybe with egg whites like a meringue?
I do get Hershey’s cocoa powder. But hey! I’m so afraid of consuming more than 20gms of net carb. I saw that 9 gms of unsweetened cocoa powder has almost 7 gms of carb in it. So that’s like one hot chocolate with HWC and whey protein, or one little fat bomb. And that kind of freaks me out because I have only 13 gms of carb left- and there’s carb in everything! Even boiled eggs.
Oh I so wish I was in a colder climate where my fat bombs didn’t melt right after taking them out of the freezer. But I’ll guess I’ll carry cheese with me. I don’t get macadamia nuts here- just almonds and peanuts and I tend to over eat peanuts so now I don’t buy them at all. I found this brand called zevic on Amazon which makes chocolates with stevia. Is this the same brand you’ve been referring to?
Macadamia nuts are expensive for me(I only use them on trips), I have the same problem with peanuts, the first week in I ate a whole jar over a couple days(ugghh). My normal nuts are walnuts, pecans, and almonds. No more than 1/4 cup a day, I sometimes add one to a fat bomb.
Zevia is a soda beverage. I have found anything with stevia on amazon to be expensive.
My cocoa powder only has 3g carbs per tablespoon I believe, if and when I mix it into my shakes it is with a scoop of powder that is 5-6g carbs. I don’t always and that would be the strongest I use it, if I am carby at that point I will skip it, I also have a choclate flavor whey powder that I can use instead.
I took tins of smoked fish with me to India. I also fasted if there was nothing I could eat.
Macadamia nuts, olives, high fat cheeses like gouda and brie.
Usually they will be able to fix you an omelet with veggies and you can add butter to it.
I know this chocolate protein to be a smart choice. I always bought different varieties of those. Then I got tired and started buying different flavours to replace my pancake/ice cream/sorbet/pastries desires. Now I miss them sooo much. Since I’m a student and don’t earn anything- I don’t want to put too much pressure on my parents. They’re nice enough to have been laying for stevia, erythritol, whey protein, ACV all of which I buy in bulk from Amazon, but I cannot ask them to buy me more than one brand/flavour at a time. I am waiting to finish the strawberry and the cafe mocha and I’ll return to chocolate again.
I’m not sure if they sell smoked tinned fish here. I live in a very idyllic little village, tucked away in the back of beyond. So nope, no supermarkets in the vicinity. One tiny local version of Walmart is there in the nearby town, which is really really close to where I live and it sells lo behold, canned chicken: sausages, salami, meatballs and that’s about it. Cheese, all cheese that we get here are processed. I still eat them. No organic butter. I’m allergic to ghee so I can’t have that. I get HWC in a tetra pack, which I’m sure to carry in my purse if I’m travelling.
So see if the final list is alright:
I’ll carry small, 20 gms packed butter cubes. So that I can do my portion control and not go crazy cause I’m stuck in a train with nothing to do.
I’ll carry processed cheese.
Boiled eggs.
Protein powder and stevia.
Sausage. Salami and meatballs.
Cucumbers.
HWC.
That’s good enough, no?
I tend to eat around 800-1000 Cals a day. I can’t eat more than that. If I do I feel bloated. My concern while travelling is that I’ll eat more than my body needs because I’ll be sitting idle watching people eating doritos and salsa.
I think so, I can survie on sausage, I did on recent trips, and will be doing another one in a week. Processed cheese is not cheese, we call it cheese food here. But I am a cheese insider, if its what you can get then I suppose, it does keep which is nice.
You must be tinny at 800 calories I would probably die, my youngest daughter eats a little more than that she is 21 and weights 95 pounds soaking wet. I wish you luck!
KCKO
I’m 5’2.5 so I’m really petite. I know it’s not cheese, but I can’t live without them. That’s my ticket to survival. I make cream cheese from milk. But I don’t think it’ll be wise to carry that- as it may get stale.
Prevent yourself from cheating. You’re the only one capable of accomplishing that, not us.
They’re kind of overbearing and I hate that. I know that they’re concerned but they shouldn’t be so judgmental and tell me all the time that I’m killing myself. They won’t literally stuff food in my mouth, but they will not let me starve. Will probably say a lot of upsetting things. So I will make sure that I don’t give them the chance to talk me into guilt eating things which upset me. I hate eating carbs because honestly, I hate the feeling that comes afterwards. I’d rather have boiled eggs.
