Presentation on KETO

(Jo) #1

Hi Guys,
I need to make a presentation at church tomorrow. Here’s a link to the powerpoint. Any suggestions for improvement would be appreciated

Only thing I saw that caught my attention was the recommendation for vegetable oils. That was one of the first things I threw when I started.

Including olive oil and avocado oil?

Looks great! Some oils you want to avoid but avocado, olive, and coconut are good. You might add a list of approved/moderation/not approved food examples.

That’s a great visual. I had wanted to put that in but then forgot.

I kept the olive oil and added in avocado and coconut oils.

It’s safest to stick to your own meat fat drippings. I never run out of fat to cook with. I keep a cup by the stove and pour any unused bacon fat in the cup. Same for slow cooking a pot of whatever meat. After the meat is cooked I refrigerate the liquid and all the fat becomes solid at the top of the container of broth. I then remove this fat, which I use for cooking, and I use the broth for other things. I haven’t needed to buy any oils for years, but if I ever run out of meat fat, my second choice would be refined coconut oil.

I respectfully disagree with this. I think it is important to get fats from different sources. Omega 3s and monounsaturated fats are as important as saturated fat. I incoporate all in my diet, olive oil, coconut oil. avocado oil, bacon grease, butter, dairy etc. I can’t eat red meat so I don’t get any of those fats.

Overall, great job! Just a few things came to mind:

  • Not sure if you want to mention artificial sweeteners when mentioning net carbs? It is a factor, but it may just complicate the overview.

  • The definition of keto is that one is in ketosis. The “rule of thumb” is that anyone under 20 net carbs would be in ketosis. But many can go higher. To me, “total carbs” are irrelevant. Undigestible carbs are just that. Most non-USA nutritional labels don’t even consider them.

  • I hate the “any above-ground vegetable” generalization. Most people would consider peas and beans and corn to be above ground veggies. And radishes are one of the lowest carb veggies.

  • Another pet peeve of mine are the terms “moderate” and “balanced” because they are too wide open for definition. I would stress adequate protein.

  • “Vegetable oils”? I would never use a corn oil. And try to avoid soybean oil. But they are popular oils because they’re cheap.

  • Page 4: “in stead” should be “instead”. “you body” should be “your body”.

  • Ketone bodies don’t fuel all bodily functions, just most.

  • Page 5: Heading overlaps first item.

  • “Exercise for weight loss is therefore pointless because it decreases metabolism even more if you are also decreasing calories consumed.” Huh? Your point is lost on me here. Exercise consumes calories. And builds muscles that need more calories in the future.

  • Page 7: I don’t see it as a “balance” of the macronutrients. We need a certain amount of protein. We need to keep (net) carbs low enough to stay in ketosis. We need fat for fuel (i.e. driven by “hunger”). That’s not a set ratio or balance between them.

  • “Burning fat makes the body excrete more salt and other electrolytes…” It’s more that water is retained when using carbs for fuel. When that water is flushed from the body, it takes many of the electrolytes with it. I would put this point above the mention of keto flu, so you can refer back to it. Even mention that something as simple as chicken broth, with its salt content, can help.

  • Page 10: “Less hot flashes” should be “Fewer hot flashes”.

  • Under useful resources, I would mention Reddit. It has a very active Keto community.

Unfortunately, there are still a lot of different definitions, concepts, and interpretations. Not all backed by good science. :frowning:

As a result, I think “keto” has about as many different denominations as “Christianity”.

Many thanks for taking the time to go through it so thoroughly. I will look at your suggestions and make the necessary changes.

Thanks!

Feedback - would be nice to replace the words for the Sample Meal days with pictures of the food, more visual

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I made the improved presentation and it was a huge success. I had brought avocado dip and pork rinds, keto bread, butter and cheese, and the dudes latest recipe for faux potato salad. All of it was a huge hit.

I’m not sure how many will actually considering adopting keto, but I hope I sowed the first seeds.

Great news - and you’re making me hungry!
