Prepping for a cheat meal

(Christy) #21

That’s amazing! Congratulations on all your progress :tada: It feels great, doesn’t it?!

My husband eats a SAD & I really thought it was going to bother me to watch him shovel cake & ice cream & pasta down his throat every meal but, it doesn’t phase me in the slightest because, like you said, I just don’t eat that way anymore. That’s a pretty good feeling, too, to be able to say that!!

Happy Ketoing, Shaena!!

If you are having wheat, be aware that it may cause a rather upset stomach. It’s the worst thing to “cheat” with as most of the population has some degree of intolerance to it. Gluten free would be much easier on the stomach.

I personally don’t have cheat days. I do have sushi days, though, which means having marinated rice with some fish. It’s something I do because both I and my daughter like it, and we can’t have it together very often at all. That’s not a cheat, it’s a rare and special treat. And I count it as I would count a cake buffet on a normal diet (not SAD, but healthy with all vegs and some fruit). Had problem at all going back to the more satiating and healthy keto afterwards.

It can be a pebble or a bump in the road depending on how you think around it. A single treat meal, or a whole cheat day that becomes two or even three, have very different effects.

Hi @Hollsoph I am here to admit I dream of cheat meals but do not actually do them. I think I may eat a bite of cake or cookie once in a while when I cheat but no cheat meals for me. In the past I counted calories and planned cheat meals as like a reward or something. Or the inevitable oh all they have are carb laden foods. I do not fear that anymore because I am nice and fat adapted I know I will not die if I skip a meal! It is so nice. Look at it more as a lifestyle like if you were allergic to peanuts you wouldnt eat them right? Carbs make me feel so bad it is simply not worth it.

Maybe I’m weird but I never cheat. I’m so addicted to carbs that I think of myself as an alcoholic except with carbs. I would never tell an alcoholic to plan a binge because they may not be able to stop and it’s the same for me. When my son got married I decided I was gonna eat whatever I wanted on that day. I did and the next day and the next day. Next thing I knew I was my heaviest weight ever AGAIN and 2 years passed.
That’s why I don’t cheat. It’s not worth it to me, it’s not good for me and Im totally satisfied and love the way I eat. This is a lifestyle for me and not a diet.

Ate the pizza. It was good but the anticipation was more grandiose than the actual eating of the pizza, lol. Two slices and now back to my normal regime. No ill effects. My hands and arms didn’t turn into rolling pins and I didn’t turn into a giant ball of dough so all is well.

Since the time I had stopped Keto WOE last time, I also kept my average carb intake down by about 75% more than previous to the Keto diet. So it’s been a while that I’ve been mostly eating a low carb diet and almost no sugar products with the exception of an occasional fruit and a sweet treat now and then. I like fruit and l live in a very rural area and my property has a 30 y/o grape arbor I will be taking advantage of to make wine and I also have apple and mulberry trees. I will probably work these foods into my WOE so I can enjoy them say, only once a month. I don’t plan on cheating per se but I truly don’t want to completely cut out a food group I like just because it doesn’t fit a specific WOE. I also love veggies, especially those of the cruciferous family so I’m extremely happy they’re on the Keto ‘OK’ list. I am naturally pretty strict in my diet commitments so I feel positive about this.

I am getting more excited about a full on Keto WOE as a permanent lifestyle and I do believe that having forums such as this to be able to lean on other members for support, ideas and encouragement when needed is also a big part of a successful endeavor.

Anyway, thanks for all the responses. I enjoyed reading your opinions and took them to heart.

I find it helpful to think of carbohydrate as though I were an alcoholic and the carbohydrate I was contemplating eating were a bottle of Scotch.

I’ve been saying this for years…YEARS… a decade at least. Feel like I’ve talked until blue in the face. Nobody believes me. It’s nice to finally have a bit of solidarity!

Glad it worked well for you!

Keep an eye on your hunger levels in the next couple of days, and be prepared for some carb cravings to re-emerge. I’m only keto since January, but low carb for 3+ years. My early “cheat” of a tuna melt on GF bread, having a couple hand rolls (with rice) after a nice sashimi dinner and a higher carb dinner the other week all had my body trying to trick me for a week or more. Just realize it is like a little kid trying to get away with something again and stay strong.

This realization helped me to realize all the times I ended up zooming up the scale before on low carb. One indulgence led to another weekly indulgence, which led to many more.

Edited to add: I’ll keep my bi-annual tuna melt, but I think I need to explore rice-less hand rolls and just skip overly carby offerings, even from well meaning but ill-informed friends. (No flour means no carbs, right?)
