Any ladies here pregnant? (Or guys with partners prego?)
Just found out I’m pregnant and looking for keto support. Haven’t had any craving yet but nauseous. In my first pregnancy I was dx with GDM but was diet controlled and haven’t had issues since. Any ideas or tips for combating nausea or other issue that typically a raise?
Pregnant!
Congrats Melissa, that’s great news.
I can’t offer any advice on morning sickness, but I can suppose something about your glucose control. Since you dipped into GDM last time, it sounds like you may tend to find it a challenge to control glucose during any pregnancy.
My understanding is when the mother’s glucose goes high she obviously makes insulin to respond, but the fetus also gets the same glucose which is a simple molecule that can cross the placental barrier. The mothers insulin however is apparently too complex, so the baby must make it’s own insulin. Any glucose excursion that the mother goes on, will be shared and it is possible that that extra demand on the fetal pancreas predisposes us to insulin resistance later in life.
So I suspect being keto is going to be one of the best things you can do for your bub, as they enter the world with a pancreas that knows what normal glucose levels should be.
Congratulations on the pregnancy. I am 26 weeks and up until 10weeks was following keto to a tea but I have fallen of the wagon. Breakfast is still hard for me cause I can’t stand the smell of bacon . Or the taste of coffee.
I have been really bad but I really want to go back to eating keto I know that you get aches and pains during pregnancy as this is my second have been told they get worse and at times the aches are bad even in joints like my knees.
My energy levels most days are almost nil and my emotions and stress are at an all time HIGH and I feel if I can get my head into the right frame of mind I can definitely get back into eating keto as most lunch and dinners are keto but breakfast and snacks aren’t.
My dr doesn’t have a issue with low carb high fat but she wants me to eat more than 20gs per day. Would love to know what others have eaten in carbs while pregnant.
I have my GTT in 2 weeks so hopefully i don’t get bad news. I didn’t have GD with my first so fingers crossed. I will however be starting to eat keto from this week.
I hope you have a great pregnancy and that staying on keto isn’t as hard for you as it is me.
Thanks for the response. I’m hoping to have better levels this go around. I suspect in my first stress raised my levels. Trying to remain stress free as much as I can
Our glucose control normall worsens as we get older so I would suspect the risk of GD increases with age too.
The other possibility in your case is that you might be abe to produce mild levels of ketones at a higher level of glucose than when you are not pregnant because your child is burning your supply too and making their own insulin. Mild levels might be enough to relieve joint pain. Another strategy short of hard core keto that you might be able to attempt is to supplement with coconut oil. The medium chained fats in coconut oil are digested rapidly into ketones.
Just wanted to chime in and ask those of you who are pregnant, were you doing daily IF prior to conceiving? I’ve been low carb/keto (without consistently fasting) for three years and the last couple months I started daily IF (about 14-18 hours) and avoided coffee, alcohol and dairy. My cycle stopped for the first time ever. So I’ve missed it twice and the third time is coming up this week. I’m planning to get levels checked, but was really bummed and guessed this was because of fasting. Are you girls fasting while pregnant? I’m thinking it’s a good idea to go back to three meals a day keto/low carb.
Hey Alison!
I was doing IF before becoming pregnant. Eating Keto actually helped my cycle become regular and I didn’t need meds or my heating pad anymore! I have heard/read that when practicing IF we need to make sure we are still getting enough to eat.
Since becoming pregnant I am not practicing IF because of my nausea, and fasting is not advised.
Hope my comments help
