Prednisone on keto

(Jeffrey Belanger) #1

Been on prednisone for 3 weeks due to hives, started at 50mg and now at 15mg a day. Just wondering if anyone has had success with staying in ketosis while on it? Ive read that it kicks you out of ketosis and spikes insulin? Ordered a ketone blood meter to check but due to covid it will be a while. Also open to any other advice while on prednisone from people who have been on it or are currently on it.

I was on it for a week, just over actually, and didn’t notice any issues with ketosis but rarely test these days, felt fine though.

For the sake of three weeks, I wouldn’t worry. Just stay on track diet-wise and let the meds do their thing. I hope they solve the issue for you.

Hey thanks for the reply! Appreciate it.

What caused the hives and how long are you going to be on the pred?

Unsure at this point, waiting on allergy testing. I’m tapering down now. I will be done in 2 weeks

Prednisone caused crazy high blood sugar for me personally. Ketones crashed but I just did my best to stay on track until I was off of it.

You will have no success with any type of steroid unfortunately.
I have used prednisone for asthma, and I am currently using dexamethasone, for my Brain AVM. I’m on 12mg, and have not been in Ketosis for weeks. I won’t be until I stop. It’s just the way it is :frowning:

Uggghh! Drugs are a hell of a thing. Thanks for the replies!

wife was on it for 6 months to maintain pregnancy while keto. It makes things hard. You probably do lose ketosis on occasion, even if you eat no carbs, but you still fare better than if eating carbs.

Been on it a handful of times over the years, no issues. Unfortunately many people are obsessed with things that don’t matter like ketone levels. I was at that point once too.

Keep in mind where you are right now… as far as most of this place is concerned EVERYTHING kicks you “out of ketosis” and “spikes” insulin!

When you started taking the prednisone did you also start eating enough carbs to be powered by them? Probably not. Yet you’re not dead right? What do you think you’re running on? EXACTLY! Ketones! The prednisone will screw with your numbers which makes no difference if you’re not obsessing about them. You’ll probably add some water weight… SO? It’ll come back off. Not a big deal. Do what you gotta do and don’t worry about it.

I too just started taking prednisone for hives yesterday. 40 mg for 3 days then 30 for 3 days then 20 for 3 days then 2 fir 3 days. I took my dose and shortly after felt wired. Then strange like headache or wine Hanover without any! Anyway decided to check my ketones via urine. Wow it was purple! Hasn’t been that high since induction back in January. Felt like keto flu again. Kind of freaked me out because I’m just starting maintenance but haven’t increased my carbs ur reduced. Still under 16. I’ve only taken 2 today. When I weighed I was the same. I’ll see what happens but I don’t want the hives but I don’t think I like this.

Prednisone cranks people up, Keto or not. Makes sense.

Don’t worry about ketosis etc. Stay keto but let the meds work. You can always get back in your groove afterward.
