Pre Keto Baseline Tests

(Jeff Martinson) #1

I’m looking to start the Keto ways. I’ve done a bit of research and really want to get good baseline numbers. I’d like to get a body fat test. I’ve done a dunk tank once before.

Question:
Body Fat - what’s the best way to test this? Is the dunk tank the best or something else?
Blood Test - what things should I get checked? I’ve heard on an early episode of the “Keto Talk” podcast that there’s a difference between the LDL and the LDLC. What “markers” should I be looking to get tested for?

Is there anything else I should test for to get a good baseline?

The answers are in the forum already but here’s the quick list as it occurs to me:

Insulin - BEST - Kraft Insulin Assay - 3 hr insulin test, OK - Fasting Insulin
Lipids - BEST - Full panel with NMR (LDL particle size analysis), OK - Basic panel - LDL/HDL/Trigs (no particle size analysis)
Sugar - BEST - HbA1C - OK - Fasting Blood Glucose (get both)
Body Fat - BEST - DEXA Scan or Dunk Tank, OK - Impedance machine
BMR - BEST - BodPod? - OK - online estimator
CVD - BEST - Coronary Calcium Score (CT), OK - Carotid Artery Scan (ultrasound)

I’m sure others have opinions…

See if there is a DexaFit facility in your area. They can provide you with the blood tests you’re looking for along with a Dexa scan (breaks down your body fat, muscle and bone mass) and they can do a 3D body scan which will give you near precise measurements of multiple areas of your body.
They even offer a plan that gives you 4 Dexa scans a year and one 3D scan a month. This will allow you to see exactly where you are losing fat from, and be sure that it is fat you are losing and not muscle.
