Potassium supplements ? (vitamin K)

(Dirty Lazy Keto'er, Sucralose freak ;)) #1

So I have heard / read, that one of the things that “might be best” for a person on a keto diet to supplement with, is Potassium (vit K) I figured that would be easy. In fact, I had been taking a supplement called Magnesium Potassium Aspartate, and I “assumed” that would give me 100% of my recommended daily allowance of vit K. Ha ! Not even close ! Instead, only 4% :frowning: So I started looking around, and nearly all of the Potassium supplements I saw, were anywhere from 2 to 6% of the daily recommended allowance. That sounds pretty lame :frowning:
So what the deal on vit K supplements ? Is there anyway to take at least 80%… maybe 100% of the daily total, affordably ? Could this help ? Is it not recommended ?

I vaguely recall Matt from Keto Connect, talking about taking a powder form of vit K, and saying that this was a doable way of guaranteeing his daily Potassium levels… Hmmm.

Your knowledge on vit K please.

The elemental symbol for potassium is K, but potassium is NOT the same as Vitamin K.

Okay. Teach me more ? What about supplements ?

This is what I take, along with calcium

Are you lacking in certain supplements/vitamins?

Because of things I have going on due to my cancer diagnosis I am taking extra vitamins/supplements to try to strengthen my bones. I think most people here do not take any extra vitamins or supplements unless they are deficient in certain areas.

Potassium can be dangerous if you take to much so I think it’s not available without a prescription in higher dose.
I don’t take potasium but I eat salt, take magnesium tablets and vit k2.
That’s all I take. Well and D when I don’t get out side much.

Hi Chris –

She is right about K being the elemental symbol for potassium, which is not the same as vitamin K.

With regards to supplementing potassium, be very careful. I think it is easy to get too much and it can be life threatening. Someone posted a little over a year ago about their trip to the ER after they took too much potassium.

Now there is vitamin K1 (normally referred to vitamin K) and vitamin K2. Different vitamins, and different sources.

K1 is easy to get, mostly from leafy greens.

K2 is much harder to get daily requirement, which is why I think you should supplement it. The Innovix that KetoCancerMom posted is one of the best brands. I use it. It is a dollar or so cheaper to buy direct from Innovix than through Amazon.

That said, lots of people, including myself, take vitamins d3, k2 and magnesium in tandem. Why? D3 helps your body absorb calcium and direct it to soft tissues that need it. K2 directs excess calcium out of soft tissue to teeth and bones – and away from arteries where it can calcify and harden your arteries. Magnesium helps improve absorption of both d3 and k2 – as well as other vitamins and minerals.

FYI, daily supplementation:
D3 125 mcg/5,000 iu
K2 100mcg
Mag 500mg

Hope this helps.

Not deficient in anything that I know of. Although my Dr. did recommend Magnesium citrate, to help with digestion (granted, my constipation issues have since pretty much resolved) and Mat from Keto connect suggested that Potassium supplements were a good idea for most Keto’ers. So since Magnesium and Potassium are often combined in supplements, I figured it would be easy to kill 2 birds with one stone that way.

Ah. I’m not taking Potassium, but may end up taking some Magnesium, based on below (although I usually get some in my KetoAide):

Yes, I had just read that too.

Wow, that stuff you posted the link for, is pretty pricey ? Hmmm…
Going to see if I can find the stuff (and check the price) for the stuff Matt from Keto Connect recommended. But I remember him saying it was pretty expensive too. I guess some things are just harder to refine, so more costly…

Just keep in mind that its a 3-month supply of Vitamin K! So, if you consider that, than its not so bad.

Good point. I will consider that… next pay day. Been going a little bit crazy with Amazon prime… for the last.,… well… 6 weeks ? :astonished:
