Hello all
Been keto now almost 6 months was feeling great. I noticed one day my energy started to return and so decided to introduce a home workout mostly core resistance for 20 mins… felt great doing it and right after but around 4-5 hours later I started feeling extreme anxiety, cold , clammy, dizzy and like I would pass out. I had these kind of feelings when I first started keto so I was aware it was something to do with blood sugar. The last few days I’ve been having this feeling again mostly after eating… does anyone else have any experience with this?
Post exercise hypo?
Did you test your blood glucose when you felt this way? Are you on any blood glucose lowering medication? Are you diagnosed with any kind of blood glucose disorder?
No I’m not on medication. I’ve tested my glucose in the past post meal and it’s been in the 80s. My a1c was 5.3. I havnt been diagnosed with anything
You should test when you get these post exercise issues. It’s possible your glucose is dropping but your liver should kick in some glucose to bring it back up. Do you eat after your exercise?
Again, your liver should step in & give you a glucose boost anyway but if you don’t test then you’re just guessing
FYI when we do strenuous exercise our blood sugar often goes up to fuel the workout so it may be that what you feel is not so much a hypo but a quick drop from higher to normal.
Yes thank you i kind of thought my sugar went up a bit. all day yesterday and today I’ve been feeling extremely hungry, carb cravings coming back. I wonder if this rise in blood sugar would be enough to kick a person out of ketosis. It feels like my body is craving carbs again and I can’t eat enough. I know form past experiences that these hypo feelings will last a few days until I consistently eat fat and protein at every meal
Just keep eating keto & your body will get the idea Do stay aware of how you feel though - it may not be blood sugar. Are you getting enough sodium?
You need a lot of water and sodium. If you work out you need even more. You’ve got to eliminate this basic requirement before looking further.
8 glasses is normal. Plus a 1 litre for each hour you work out…
See how you go.
Yes I’m having 2 teaspoons of salt daily so I presume this is enough… I will try and keep on top of it. I guess it was more than likely the extra stress of this workout. I havnt worked out like that in a few years… needless to say I’m going to attempt to just walk every day and build up slowly… I’m a bit of an all or nothing person which often dosnt help.
Yeah - you don’t want to overdo the exercise too soon but IMHO your salt intake sounds fine.
I often don’t eat for several hours after exercise, but I’ve been on low carb 5+ years.
I recommend taking blood sugar a lot, like every 15-30 minutes if it becomes a pattern. Without that data, you can’t tell if it’s blood sugar.
We are at our healthiest when we are getting between 10 and 15 g/day of table salt, which translates to 2-3 U.S. teaspoons a day. Be sure to stay hydrated by drinking to thirst. Don’t force water, but do be sure to drink when you are thirsty. If we don’t get enough sodium, our blood volume declines in order to keep the necessary concentration in the blood. It also gets our other electrolytes out of whack. Having a cup of bone broth 30-45 minutes will help both your sodium level and your hydration.
I’ve had something similar. I found out that I wasn’t getting enough protein. Adding more protein fixed it. I felt better immediately after I ate a bunch of protein but it took a few days for my body to get optimal.
Thanks everyone I’ve upped my calorie intake last few days and I’m feeling a lot better
