Pork rinds and other "Keto" foods that use non-keto oils

Hey fellow keto peeps!!

This question was posed to me by a non keto colleague who was questioning pork rinds. How can they be good for you, they are processed with a low grade crappy oil (most likely). I have been looking ever since and don’t really see olive oil or other quality oil as the oil they are fried in. Can someone help me figure this mental hurdle out? I LOVE using pork rinds in many things or just plain eat them, all the time. Are they/can they be harmful because of the crappy oil they are fried in?

To what length do you got to, to ensure the quality of such a food? My favorite blue cheese dressing also uses canola oil…another no no…I enjoy cooking, but don’t always have the time to make such condiments.

Thanks in advance!!!

I like the ones that are fried in their own fat.

I sure hope they’re not fried in olive oil, that’s not something you want heated anywhere near frying temperatures.

Pretty much all of them I’ve seen have been fried in sunflower or canola oil, but several of them also seem to be fried in “animal fat” (probably lard) in addition to the oils. I would go for the ones with the highest saturated fat ratio since they would have the most animal fat, but I also don’t eat that much pork rinds in large part due to the oils in them.

I eat pork rinds maybe once or twice a month, so at that level of exposure I wouldn’t worry as much as I would for a food I am eating every day. The ones I buy happen to be fried in lard, which makes sense since the raw materials for lard is located right next to the skin.

it’s every easy to just eat a couple and put them down so I guess that helps. lot less consumption.

I’ve never seen any that are fried in oil. Usually, the ingredients are just pork and salt.

Thanks for the quick responses!! #mindatease :grinning:

I was under the impression it was mid-grade when it comes to frying. Is that not correct?

It has a low smoke point and enough polyunsaturated fatty acids that you don’t want to overheat it. Use your olive oil in your salad dressing and cook with tallow, lard, butter, or coconut oil. The first three are very low in polyunsaturates, and all four have higher smoke points than olive oil.

Yes. Correct. THIS^^^
All the pork rinds and cracklin’s available for purchase here in Minnesota are fried in their own fat.
LARD
PORK FAT

Read your labels.

NOT most likely. Your non-keto friend needs to do some research before actively discouraging you.

Them’s fightin’ words.
Crappy oils.

That just doesn’t make sense, think of what we’re talking about, they come with their own fat! Which is the good stuff. It would literally cost them more to bring in garbage oils and they already have a never ending supply of the good stuff.
