I need help here, folks! I sucked at science and math in school, so please don’t ask me to figure out this stuff by myself. I need to know which one is the BEST when it comes to Keto calculators. I swear that every single website gives me different numbers. Thanks so much!
PLEASE recommend a good Keto Calculator!
A lot of folks here use Chronometer. There is a free version, and one can also upgrade and pay.
Ruled me seems to be the best so far, but what percentage should I put into the “how much of a deficit do you want?” The reason I ask is this…we are going on a cruise in early 2019 and I want to not be embarrassed to walk around in shorts. Should I put in the 30% deficit? Thanks again!
The one on ruled.me has the simplest options and seemed to work well for me in the beginning, but I stopped following it’s recommended macros a while ago. After 6 months I know what personally works best for me. Although If I had to recommend one, I’d go with ruled.me’s.
And not a single one will be accurate. They’re pretty much just WAGs. About the only macro estimate that really matters is protein. And on that one, you’re better off eating too much rather than not enough. It will vary widely depending on body composition and activity level, which people are bad at estimating in the first place.
You pretty much know your carb level – typically less than 20 grams of net carbs to start.
Then, fat is primarily whether you’re hungry or not, especially once you’re in ketosis, because that suppresses appetite for most people. Early on, just feed any hunger with fat, maybe a little protein, but as few carbs as possible.
I used this one and primarily used the protein range to develop my macros:
NO, no, no. deficits are not the issue with keto. The carbs are the issue, cut out carbs, go as low as you can stand. Eat some protein and fats till satiety. Don’t make it harder than it needs to be. Any thing under 20% deficit won’t give you enough nutrition.
Do yourself a big favor and go to 2ketodudes.com page with all the episodes, I suggest you listen to the following episodes:
26, 48, 104, 105, 106 and any others that sound like something you are interested in learning about.
All the best sorting yourself out.
I wouldn’t worry too much about eating in a deficit. It’ll probably come naturally.
I struggle to eat more than a 30% deficit now that I eat low carb and fast, and I guess a lot of people are like that?
I was going to post a reply, but @OgreZed said it perfectly, so I’ll jusy repost his reply for emphasis.
I’m a big fan of not fussing with macros. Letting the body figure out what it needs is a strategy that makes more sense to me. I certainly don’t know better than my body does.
The Web sites do seem to be useful, however, for discovering carbohydrate that wasn’t obvious from reading the label.
Agree! I used a calculator for the first weeks I was on keto just to tell me about carb numbers, etc. Haven’t used one since, because I know what I can and can’t eat. This is a way of life for me and I don’t want to have to be continually messing with calculators.
I think sometimes people make this way too complicated when it’s really a very simple WOE.
Sometimes people seem to need the complications, though. I’ll never understand it, however . . . just call me the Lazy Ketonian, lol! (I used to be Simple Simon, back when the Pieman and I were best buds!)
LOL, Paul! I guess I’m also a Lazy Ketonian.
I started keto to lose weight, but that has almost become secondary since I’ve learned about all the health benefits. I started in mid-May, am now no longer pre-diabetic, and down 16+ lbs. (about 45 lbs. to go). I like to follow the KISS rule and keep it simple since it’s something I’ll be doing for a long time.
