Planning to cheat....advise please

#1

Ok, I am 30 pounds down in only 2 months with 10 to go. However, I have a long-planned trip to New York for a week of opera and several meals at Michelin starred restaurants. that and our usual Levain bakery run and at least one warm bagel in the AM. Some traditions we have as a couple…

I think I can jump right back to full on low carb when I return. Any advice on recovery?

Yep, don’t sweat it. Keto obviously suits you, so enjoy your break, eat what makes you feel good. When you come back, go back to doing what you were doing. No dramas.

Agree with Alec! Enjoy your trip and enjoy some amazing meals. Personally, I would skip the bagel and just do OMAD because that’s just me but I would really enjoy the dinners and some really nice wine. Just get back on the train when you get back. Have fun. Keep Calm and Keto On!

Those are obviously important things for you, and I’d be damned if I would miss the opportunity to eat several meals at Michelin starred restaurants in the name of keto. Sounds like a fantastic memorable trip. Enjoy yourself and come home to keto. :cowboy_hat_face:

Enjoy yourself! And enjoy the bagel. Just keep it in check and try not to spiral into a days long binge  The odd non-keto meal shouldn’t irredeemably derail you, much the same way as eating one healthy meal won’t fix all your problems if your overall diet is rubbish.

I agree with all the others who basically have said some version of “have fun!” The only other thing that I would add is that you’ll discover how metabolically flexible you are. You may bounce back quickly or you might not feel so great. Either way it’ll be data for the next trip and you’ll make choices about what’s worth it and what isn’t.

Don’t try to make the meals “Keto” - just enjoy them as they were meant to be enjoyed.

Enjoy your trip and don’t sweat it!

Enjoy your trip! Relax and enjoy the food. I have found that top restaurants often don’t serve a mass of carb heavy meals. Certainly not chips with everything! And portions are generally smaller too!
You might find that a bagel isn’t quite so appealing as it once was. The important thing is not to stress and enjoy!

I didn’t skip that bagel… Ess-a-bagel and waited a minute for an everything bagel to just come out of the oven…almost burned my hand slicing into it and schmearing that herbed cream cheese…good grief I could eat that every day…

SO far I have been truly enjoying the food here and still skipping the rice and potatoes… but everything else has put me way out and I am enjoying it! Lunch today at Marea. There is a Danish bakery called Ole & Steen next door to our hotel. Their pastries are absolutely amazing…

Don’t sweat it. Personally, I almost never give up a special occasion for Keto. In the scope of things, one meal or a few days makes no difference at all.

One thing I would recommed, however, is slowly add a few carbs before your first Michelin restaurant. It would be a shame to have some “negative” reactions to adding carbs back during your meal.

Enjoy the trip!

I don’t skip the bagels in NYC either …with lox, cream cheese, onion and capers.
They ruin me for bagels from anywhere else!!

Just like I don’t skip pizza and risotto when I am in Italy

UPDATE ON RESULTS Well it was awesome. Six operas including the entire Ring cycle, multiple museums (Frida kahlo exhiibt in Brooklyn, Whitney, etc) and libraries, private tours and lectures on opera items. That plus an amazing Danish bakery ext to my hotel, some great bagels and a lunch at Marea (with Michael Douglas and the CEO of Michael Kohrs at the table next to us–Michael Douglas is kind of loud) and some other fantastic meals… so I was afraid I would be way off when I got back Sunday night.

Well, I went back on keto Monday AM, swilling MCT oil and watching the carbs… By Wednesday I am back to my pre-trip weight and by this AM (Thursday ) I am (barely) at a new low and that strip finally turned pink showing a trace of ketones… Thanks for the advice. That trip would have been miserable if I had avoided the old favorites. I did manage to pass on the potatoes and rice and only ate bread when it was awesome…which it was all too often. But I have no issues getting back on the horse…

See you around the forum.

Huzzah! So glad you had a good time, made conscious decisions about what was worth indulging in and what wasn’t, and got straight back on the horse again when you returned. Welcome back

Yay! Pre-keto I never thought about all the carbs I was stuffing down my gut. These days I am damn picky about what carbs I choose to eat and it has to be something really good to be worth it.

That’s exactly what my husband and I did on our 2-week Italy vacation last year. We didn’t mindlessly eats carbs - we selectively ate them and didn’t gain any weight.

Glad you were able to get right back into ketosis and pick up where you left off.

And your trip sounds fabulous!!!
