Pickle juice and cramps

(Bob M) #1

Had a cramp in my right lower leg last night, due to working on drywalling and painting a “room” in the basement all weekend. Up and down ladders, kneeling on the concrete floor, etc.

Got cramp after going to bed. Had already taken two magnesium pills. Drank some pickle juice, and the cramp went away immediately.

So, if you have pickle juice, it’s an option for lower leg cramps.

NEVER heard of that before!
Bonus: I love pickle juice.

You guys, honestly. Pickle juice? … thats vinegar here in the UK

This is study where they induced cramps electrically, and pickle juice stopped them basically immediately:

I knew about the research, but didn’t know pickle juice would actually work as well as it did, mainly because I’ve never had the opportunity to drink pickle juice while having a cramp, until the other day. I have to say, I was amazed. Stunned, really.

Could something like apple cider vinegar do the same? That would be an interesting test.

It’s pickle juice here, always sugary, sadly. Just a bit so I still drink it but due to this, we almost never eat pickles now.
The pickle flavor is totally DIVINE. I hate vinegar+water. I LOVE pickle juice. Drank so much in my younger years, it was wonderful. I love vinegar (well the good kind. not apple cider vinegar and definitely not the 30% sugar ones or what. some insane content, IDK why they do that) and the pickles themselves… And water, definitely love water, now much more than before, I got thirstier than ever…

I heard it is good for electrolytes but not that it works specifically for cramps. I wonder if it works for me as it’s always Mg I need and pickle juice probably don’t have much…

You guys who noticed this effect, how much pickle juice was needed…?
I can’t even test it as if I have cramps, it always disappears in seconds. Sometimes I still feel a twinge though but it’s so tiny I can’t be even sure I have it… And my cramps happen a few times per year so not very often…

Definitely pickle juice!!! I get leg cramps at night quite often. Some are real golly-whoppers that launch you out of bed directly into a polka dance. Protocol is tablespoon of yellow mustard and a swig or two of pickle juice to wash it down. Does the trick every time. Clausen’s fresh pickles has the best juice.

Oh that’s not much, a jar of pickle goes a long way! And my sugar free mustard arrived yesterday and I LOVE eating mustard, even alone… I will try this when the need arises!

It definitely depends on what kind of pickles as to what’s in the juice.

We grow cucumbers and sell some pickles at the market. Bread n Butter pickles are nearly sickeningly sweet, with TONS of sugar. Kosher Dill pickles (my favorite), pretty much vinegar, salt, and some spices, not much sugar.

I do like pickle juice but don’t consume much of it. I never think of it except when I have the pickles out for some reason and that’s only a handful of times a year. I rarely get cramps except when I’ve failed to keep hydrated, not often, typically summertime when working hard outside.

Which pickle juice though?
I preserve vegetables in salt n water, with zero vinegar… fermentation does the rest.
The juice is very salty with the flavor of the vegetable.
