Perspective is Everything

Eat to live, rather than live to eat!

During the holiday season I try to remember this and focus on the goals keto draws me towards. I repeat (remeat?) this to myself whenever I am tempted to not eat keto. The hard truth is that, for some of us, diversion is dangerous. I need to always focus on the long-term goal rather than short-term pleasure.

In another keto group someone asked who planned to go “off plan” for Christmas. Honestly, keto is my gift. It’s my life. I can’t imagine “going off plan”. I can appreciate that some people can do this, but for me it would be like skipping dialysis treatment to have some fun, or an alcoholic allowing a drinking break for the holiday.

Agreed. it keeps getting easier and easier for me to eat right.

My plan is so delicious why would I ever stray!

Seriously, though, I can see the temptation to go off plan for special events, but the problem is then you can keep coming up with special event excuses.

Bacon in my pocket, im ready for anything. Plus most of the time I’m not hungry

Today was one of those days when, for whatever reason, I was hungrier than usual. Normally, I’d pop out to a McDonald’s for a couple of double cheeseburgers (no bun) but today my car was in the shop and I didn’t have any way to get there.

In the break room was the usual assortment of Christmas cookies, candied popcorn, etc that you see this time of year. I just stood there for three or four minutes staring at the plates of goodies. Before I would literally have not had enough control over my body to keep from picking up a cookie.

Today? Nothing. I was kind of sad that I don’t eat that stuff anymore, but not tempted. When I first started keto I never got that “satiated” feeling people report – I was always hungry. But I think, maybe, after eight months, it’s happening.

“Is that bacon in your pocket or are your ketones happy to see me?”

I like Richard Feinman’s take:

This will be my first holiday staying true to my WOE. (I’ve lost over 130 lbs and about 15 to go. Was not a linear journey but progressively and ultimately trending in the right direction over last few years.) No guests or trips this December, so will be easy as I did all the shopping. In truth, I really don’t want the sugary or starchy stuff anymore, but had thought about wine. I’m in midst of a divorce (my choice) and still living (unhappily/miserably) together, lost a job which I loved at the end of September, and it would be easy to make the excuse that I need it or deserve it. But I have become stronger than that! I need to be a good role model for my 10 yo daughter, and maintaining good health is so important to me. So I am drawing strength from my accomplishments, my goals, and my love for my daughter. And from all of you! Feasting on lobster tonight and roast beef tomorrow and will thoroughly enjoy and become further empowered with every bite. Happy and healthy holidays to everyone!!

Hello! Donna, where did you find this quote? “Is that bacon in your pocket or are your ketones happy to see me?”

(Meeping up the Science!) #11

Oh gosh, I don’t know…that was so long ago. I’m sorry. I don’t even remember finding it to start with, heh.
