Period while water fasting

Hello! Long time reader first time poster, and for my first post I would rather this not be the topic but most questions I have are pretty well covered (I’m a binge reader) I have been keto for 5 weeks and started my first water fast 61 hours ago (black coffee, tea and about a gallon of water a day plus magnesium and electrolyte salts)…TOM came a week early and so I am not sure scientifically what is going on enternally. Was hoping to detox, refresh and hopefull clothes fit a little better with this fast but now I am just feeling like I am retaining water everywhere clothes seem a little snugger. Not sure if this fast is doing any good or if after a few days bloating/water retentions will subside…are my hormones effecting the fasting benefits etc…? Any advice greatly appreciated!

It’s totally normal for things to go a bit screwy at first, please don’t worry. It’ll settle.

Ketosis and fasting can affect your hormones in a couple of ways (this seems to be especially true for women). The fact that you are probably consuming more fat (and especially saturated fat and cholesterol) will give your body the building blocks it needs to heal itself, this includes healing any hormone imbalances that might have been going on under the radar. Fasting can jump start fat burning, and hormones (and other stuff that’s stored in the fat cells along with the lipids) can be released and affect you as well.

I’m peri-menopausal (pre-keto I was approaching the 6 month mark since my last period), after eating keto for about a week, I had a full on period. Every time I have fasted for more than 3 days, I have had a period. The first two fasts (14 days and then 5 days), I had periods which were very light but lasted for weeks! I haven’t fasted for a couple of months now and I don’t know if this will continue to occur with my fasting. I still need to lose significant weight, so I think it’s definitely possible/probable. If that’s my price for fat loss, it’s still worth it to me.

Hope this info helps. Good luck!

Thank you SO much for the reply! I just feel so bloated/puffy right now and don’t know if I am being counter productive of the fasting benefits…but I don’t feel bad other than that. Thanks again!
