Peoples Reaction to weight loss

#1

First off , Hello all  Nice too meet you , now, I have lost about 40lbs in about 4 months and I would say its fairly noticeable (yay) , via my one chin and smaller belly annnyway , I find that lots of people in my daily life(minus the wife) do not really care too comment or are I feel envious in some way , and the few people that have said ā€œHey man whats going on with you working out ectā€ ? are people that generally liked anyway before any positive comments , not that I really want or like the comments I do find interesting peoples reactions or lack there of too my changes , anyway hope that makes sense and what have been your experiences with this ?
Peace

Nobody likes the person achieving their goal while they’re failing at theirs! Congrats on dumping 40lbs and a chin!

I was told by several people at work that they didn’t want to say anything for fear it was due to a medical illness or something. But when they saw me getting more energetic instead of less, they finally mentioned it. But it wasn’t until I had lost 50 pounds and was nothing but smiles. I didn’t assume it was envy.

Yesterday, someone told me ā€œYou have no idea how inspiring you’ve been to others here at work.ā€ That felt great. Quiet success.

I have considered the possible illness part , I guess better safe then sorry , and congratulations on down 50 !! nice .

For me, only the people who don’t see me every day end up saying something. The people who see me all the time don’t notice because it’s been so gradual. Around 2 pounds a week or so. But when I started wearing slim fitting clothes a few more noticed and said something.

So it may not all be from people who are jealous. (But maybe some of them!)

I had to break 50lbs loss and upgrade my attire before people mentioned it. I also think people worry about illiness.

Congratulations on you weight loss.

I remember the first time I lost 50 pounds via caloric deficit. A customer came to my office and said ā€œyou`ve lost so much weight, are you well?ā€

Another time I showed up for an appointment and they said ā€œoh, I thought Scott was comingā€ I said ā€œI am scottā€.

On keto I look better and people say on my starvation diet I looked gaunt.

I’ve been asked if I have cancer. Perhaps the shorn head along with weight loss can lead to such assumptions :innocent::rofl:

Only one person has mentioned it so far. She learned that I was doing keto woe and she freaked. Oh, I am going to die. I am killing my organs. Oh, go see a doctor quick…this is very unhealthy.

Yeah…now I only smile and nod.

(Scott) #12

You could also say ā€œI am not dead yetā€

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #13

Another possibility is because saying, ā€œHey, you lost weight!ā€ might be the same as saying, ā€œHey, you used to be fat(ter)!ā€ and that is slippery social ground to navigate.

I sometimes wonder if it’s not a touchy subject to comment on someone’s physical appearance in the workplace due to sexual harassment issues. Like, I look at your body a lot and I’ve noticed that your body is a different shape and I’d thought I’d mention out loud that I’m noticing your body today. Some people may think it seems like they’re checking you out, even if they aren’t actually ā€œchecking you outā€.

(Scott) #15

On the other hand who gets upset when someone says you look great, you lost some weight.

(Wendy) #16

I’ve had many comments but the ones that I don’t like are, ā€œAre you still losing? You need to stop.ā€ I always say I’m not still losing (though I’ve dropped an extra 5 pounds, I’ve been pretty much maintaining right around 115-120 pounds for a few months now.
I have had some ask if I’m sick. They are happy when I share that I’ve just changed my eating habits. There are those afraid of what they have heard of Keto or chloresterol fears, but most are just happy for me.

I’m one of the folks who don’t comment, and it’s not because I don’t care. If someone is looking particularly radiant or healthy - independent of size- I will generally say something, but otherwise I keep my mouth shut. It just seems rude to comment on other people’s weight or size.

At 70 I’ve reduced body fat 30-35 pounds, added 10-12 lbs of muscle and keep 12.9% body fat. In the days before tractors and electricity people in my condition at my age were common, ordinary.

Where I stand out is in public places where nobody knows me. I’m a walking reminder of how everybody can and should look. I’d like to hope I’m an inpiration to a few others.
