Peanut Butter woes why?

(Heather Meyer) #1

So… i have been Ketoing and enjoying my homemade Keto treats occassionally. For someone who went from addicted to sugar and carba to someone who has been fasting 20 hours multiple times per week…i feel like im having great success! HOWEVER…

There is this one food… Peanut Butter! I dont understand why or how… but i eat it in a Keto sweet and i CRAVE it multiple times per day. I want it ALL the time and yet… it makes me feel horrible! I have noticed after consuming it… my body gets achy joints and belly gets bloated and i feel like ive just finished a feast or somthing.
Anyone know why Peanut Butter would do that?
For reference… my PB is unsweetned. Only ingridents are PB and salt.

I have noticed i also get stiff, achy joints from other nuts too… like almost all nuts! Pecans, Cashews, Almonds, Hazelnuts
Is this the sign of intolerence to nuts?

I made this ahhhmazing PB fudge from Low Carb Yum blog and now i cant stop eating it. Literally all my carbs from the day are due to this fudge. The fudge is 3 net per 2x2 square. And i want to quit it but i had brought it down for my family and my Great Grandma who doesnt eat sugar. So its not like i can just toss it out!

There is a theory that we’re drawn to foods we’re intolerant to mentioned briefly here

https://autoimmunewellness.com/breaking-the-cycle-of-food-cravings-why-are-we-drawn-to-foods-that-harm-us/

Could be total BS but either way you’re probably better off just not having peanut butter in the house. Many people find it hard to step away from the jar.

I have been told that PB is not a nut but a legume and that is why our bodies have great difficulty digesting it. I have a difficult time with PB and as much as I LOVE it… I just know my body and my gut hates it. Lol. So… I have found a almond butter that I like. It took trialing a few…cause at first I didn’t like almond butter.
It may not be nuts… it could just be the PB but you have to see how your body reacts. It is a game of watch and see. The body is weird. I react the same way with joint pain with nightshades, and migraines with Pecans. It takes patience and careful observation :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I totally crave the food I’m allergic/intolerant to… it’s a struggle :rofl::rofl:

Well there you go - there’s something in the theory after all :slightly_smiling_face:

Hmmm. Interesting. You mentioned other nuts such as almonds can be a problem, too, so I would hesitate to suggest almond butter as a possible replacement, although, I don’t know if you might have tried it.

Another one I’ve heard of is sunflower seed butter. I don’t know whether sunflower seeds would cause any issue.

Those three are all quite different.

Maybe not all that helpful, but just sharing. Good luck!

Yes. Yes you can. Do it right now, as soon as you read this.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #8

My mother’s allergist told her that years ago, when she tested allergic to all her favorite foods. I couldn’t point to any hard evidence, but it seems to be experientially true.

I doubt you’d have trouble tossing it out if the peanuts sent you into anaphylactic shock and you had to be treated in the emergency room.

So what is different in this situation? Well, the symptoms are not fatal, however unpleasant they may be, so they are not enough to overcome the craving and motivate you not to eat the stuff. You might want to take a look at the reasons for that. In any case, if you are going to continue to eat peanuts, you will just have to endure the consequences. If you don’t want the consequences, don’t eat the peanuts. It’s not really all that complicated. I can’t tell you which decision to make, but I can tell you that only you can make the decision. No one can make it for you.

Lots of people develop allergies later in life, we are not always born with them. If nuts in general are causing problems, it could be a sign you are developing a nut allergy. Try eliminating nuts for a few day and see if you feel better.

As for the PB. It is not a nut, it is a legume. It is higher in carbs to begin with, 20g. per 100 g serve.
I am personally not a fan I much prefer almond or macadamia if I want nut butter

Good luck sorting it all out.

Yep, a LOT of anecdotal evidence to that effect. Would be interesting to see if any decent studies have been done along these lines.

God knows that all the foods I have real cravings for are crap. I mean, I do love a lot of health-giving, natural, whole foods too and I enjoy eating them, but the stuff I feel really ‘addicted’ to is always crap and makes me feel crap. Yet I still want them…

No vegetables?

The take home message about eating “20grams carbs, sufficient protein and the rest fat until full” is not the be-all-and-end-all. It’s a heavily distilled message - the rest of the story is we should get most of those 20g from low carb vegetables like broccoli as opposed to industrially produced, heavily processed peanut butter. Unless your talking about home made stuff?

Sorry to say but it all sounds like trouble.

You ask why? They manipulate ingredients until they hit ‘bliss point” - a big rush of dopamine. They have probably smuggled some sweetener in there under another name like ‘extract off blah blah blah’.

I’m not saying it is related - but it reminds me of people addicted to Pepsi zero and similar drinks with zero sugar but somehow still very addictive and somehow the pounds buildup.

PB is a trigger food for a massive amount of people. No idea why. If I have it then I measure it out into portions to take to work with me, but I mostly avoid even buying it.

#14

Have you considered roasting pepitas (pumpkin seeds) and making a paste out of that. I’ve noticed they have a nice nutty flavour when roasted. I think you can also buy ready made pepita butter as well.

#15

What if vegetables make me feel yucky?

#16

Fair enough but I seriously doubt the best solution is industrial PB, surly there a better options. I could be totally wrong and the stuff might be great but really?

(Mike W.) #17

Then you just don’t get to eat carbs. Eat another steak. I’ve seen your menu…lol

(Running from stupidity) #18

It’s been said over and over and over. It’s not a message that is desired.

Then get some carbs from cheese and other dairy?

I have a hypothesis (based solely on my own life experience) that our bodies develop intolerances to the food we love the most. Perhaps due to overconsumption? Every.single.food I’ve loved, I have developed intolerances to slowly over the years until they become so painful that I have to cut them out. Literally every one. I have no foods left that I can eat that I truly love.
I feel like Johanna Mason in Hunger Games, only about food lol:
