Pea protein in milkadamia (macadamia milk), is it keto?

(Heather ) #1

Is the pea protein powder in this okay? And are any of the ingredients bad? It has zero net carbs and high fat. I love this milk and it’s a great alternative to dairy since I would like to take some time off from dairy to see if I notice any changes. This tastes like melted vanilla ice cream it is so good.

I didn’t think it looked so bad. I’m more comfortable with pea protein than soy protein. Most of the other stuff looked pretty benign unless I missed something.

I honestly don’t know if it would be considered “keto” by some of the more strict by definition, but it appears that it could fit well into a person’s macros.

I wonder if it would taste good in coffee as a replacement for cream / creamer? I’ve not seen it in a store near me but if I did, I might be tempted to try it…

Why wouldn’t it be keto? There are keto vegetarians. They still eat protein even though it comes from dairy and vegetable sources. It’s probably not as digestible as animal protein, but it is only 1 gram per serving. I wouldn’t worry about it unless you have an allergy or intolerance to peas/legumes.

It’s really weird - some stores (WalMart) put it in the dairy refrigerators with the other nut milks; some put it elsewhere (because it is shelf-stable until opened). If you don’t see it, check their app if they have one, or just ask.

PS I bought it to try to make a chocolate milk replacement for my hubby (he needs more fat). Mixed it with a little cream, some cocoa and sucralose. He liked it.

About the only thing I can think of in regards to pea protein would be that it’s made out of peas, which is a legume. Some in the keto world would put that into a category kinda like beans (pretty much same family), which they might shun. The starch and fiber are mostly removed so it is very friendly as far as carbs. But it’s still made out of peas.

I’ve not used pea protein as an ingredient but there is one kind of fake meat that’s made out of pea protein that I’ll go for if I need something in the fake meat category when I’m making something for vegetarian friends. And both my wife and I are just fine eating it, no bad reactions like with soy products.

That’s where my thoughts about ‘not sure about keto friendly’ came from. It wasn’t about the carbs. And maybe most would be just fine using it. I haven’t researched stuff like lectins and fun stuff like that. Sorry if it gave a scare, didn’t mean to do that.

I did do some poking around online and there is a store that says it has the stuff in stock, but it’s almost an hour drive. Wasn’t headed that way today but maybe soon.

It’s available online, at pretty decent prices, too, but mostly in something like 6-packs. I’d like to try one first just in case it doesn’t turn out to be quite what I’m looking for. If I do like it, then maybe one of those online bargains may be worth jumping on.

Everything is keto, as long as you keep you carbs real low, As Amy Berger says in her excellent videos, to change a 10 carb food to 5 carbs is to eat half as much.

That’s good.

IIFYM (If it fits your macros) isn’t a bad way to go if it works for the person doing it. I would guess quite a few of us fit into that category.

To be fair, though, a few can’t. And I suspect they’re a little more strict about staying away from the legumes and underground veggies, (and ice cream and doughnuts and pretzels and beer), even in small amounts.

Looks good to me, but vegetable protein isn’t quite as solid as animal protein (no really, beyond the “completeness” issue there’s an absorption thing), so I dunno that I’d count that towards my protein macro as it’s listed, if I were being particularly persnickety. But that’s a MINOR quibble, and if it tastes like melted vanilla ice cream (unsweetened), and that’s your jam, keto on.

It’s so good as chocolate milk (which I’ve missed) and in earl grey tea or coffee  your reasoning seems similar to mine, I had posted this on a Fb group and a lot of people commented it wasn’t keto

(Brian) #11

If it tells you anything about what I think, I’m on the hunt for some. I want to try it.

I use a lot of heavy whipping cream and wondered if this could work as an alternative for part of it.

People on FB would argue with a fence post.

Good thing I didn’t know peas weren’t considered “keto” when I popped my fresh garden peas in my mouth before they ever made it to the house!

Or is it “not keto” because not whole food? My stevia and Truvia would be forbotten then.

It is low carb so it is keto in my book!! I may look for it also to make chocolate milk for my hubbie’s sweet tooth that never completely went away with keto

Thought I’d update… I found a package of macadamia nut milk in a grocery store not too far away and bought one. It was of the vanilla unsweetened variety and the nutrition info on the packaged looked really good.

It was with high hopes that I used some in my coffee this morning. I added what I usually add as cream. Very little color, could barely taste it. Added more, which got me to something close to half coffee and half macadamia nut milk. Didn’t taste bad, but lacked smoothness and added very little flavor, plus, with all of the macadamia nut milk, the coffee now tasted very watered down. It was not the experience I had hoped for.

I did taste a bit of it just by itself. It was indeed a fairly pleasant taste though very weak.

I won’t throw it away. I’ll probably use it in baking something or another, maybe like I would use almond milk. A substitute for my HWC in coffee, nope, not gonna cut it.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. I liked it better than some of the other substitutes I’ve tried.
