Good job!

I’m pretty certain that as Hipsters evolve they go one of two ways - they progress to either full-blown bourgeoisie or hard-core dirty stinking hippy.

Here is a handy guide: Hipster vs Hippie

(Running from stupidity) #24

• It is believed that the term ‘hippie’ was coined from the word ‘hipster’.

Isn’t that backwards?

I know “hipster” is older, but it had pretty much gone by the time hippies arrived.

I dunno.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #25

Right, but when the term hippie was coined, the original hipster was a more recent memory. Current hipster simultaneously strive to be unique and retro.

Once a midwestern friend tried to insult a mutual friend by calling him a hipster. When I calmly and happily agreed rather than laughing at said friend, midwestern friend looked confused for a moment before remembering I am Oregonian and that hipster (and hippie) is not a slur.

Paganism is an umbrella term that encapsulates Earth-based, Goddess-centered neo-religious practices that started showing up in the 60’s and 70’s. It includes, WIcca, Druidry, Heathenry/Asatru, Satanism, Polytheism, etc. It does not include systems of belief like Buddhism, Hinduism, and native or aboriginal religious ideas.

And, your average folks from the beautiful PNW drive Subarus (Suebies, as my daughter would say!) :grinning::oncoming_automobile::cloud_with_rain:

Absolutely wonderful! I can’t believe I missed this until now. I must have been with my family in Montreal at the time that it first appeared.

(Running from stupidity) #29

Family AND Montreal? Man, that’ll screw things up BIGTIME.

Montreal is my hometown.

I’ve meant to ask you, I know that you’re from Australia, but are you originally of British origins? I only ask because you have some turns of phrase that I’ve always associated with the British. However it may just be the case that the British and the Australians share a few of the same ones and I wasn’t aware.

Yes and (mostly) no?

Born in England (dad was there doing his PhD) but lived here (mostly) since about 3yo. Parents go back generations of Kiwis.

But old person, voracious reader, and long-time journalist. Picked stuff up from everywhere, magpie-style
