Pappy’s C-Pap

(Robin) #1

Weird question, blame my hubby. He uses a c-pap and in the morning can see how many “episodes” he had in the night. He started on LC/Keto about six weeks ago. For two weeks now, he has extremely low number of events. He has lost some weight, but didn’t need to and now eats to maintain/not lose.
Question: Keto related?

Less obstruction due to tissue shrinkage? Just a guess, here - carbohydrates are stored with water in the body (each gram of carbs are attached to ~3 grams of water). It’s normal to lose some ‘water weight’ when first really restricting carbs.

There might be some additional effect from less salt and other electrolytes, if the food is less processed, overall. Even more speculative - less chemical food additives leading to less hormonal effect and possible less tissue engorgement, tying in with a lower overall inflammation level due to fewer carbs.

I would suggest two possible explanations. The first is that visceral fat deposits, now cleared up by a ketogenic diet, may have been interfering with your husband’s breathing. The second is that keto is known to help with allergies, and that may also be relevant to your husband’s experience. I can certainly testify that my respiratory allergies are a lot better on keto.

I would think yes. Anything that lowers systemic inflammation will improve overall health, including breathing capacity.
In any case, congrats to him! that’s wonderful news.

If you have time, check out James Nestor’s new book on breathing. It’s fascinating and goes into a lot of detail about facial structure, health and breathing.

Overall reduction of inflamation. I could never breathe through my nose and had inflamed joint issues. All went away with VLCHF nutrition. My sinus clearing was the very first noticable effect, happening in just a few fays.

Less processed food might be a Huge factor for him. Before keto, he lived on things that came from boxes, cans, bottles, etc. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. Always interested in relevant books.

I think you are probably right. His sinus issues and allergies seem about the same, so that makes good old inflammation the likely victim of keto. Whatever, it’s a good thing!
