Pain under right ribs when pressed

(Bozidar Sadak) #1

Hi people.

I started keto one month ago and I feel great, but there is something that concerns me.
It is not a huge problem but maybe somebody experienced can comment.

Under my right ribs, all along from the center to the side there is a pain when I press with my fingers.
If I breath in deeply and press then its really painful, and the pain is there ONLY if I press.
Other then that, I can jump or do whatever I want and it doesn’t hurt.
On the right side there is liver, gall bladder and pancreas as you go from the middle to the left.

This pain started only after going on Keto, not before.
It is not a huge deal but it worries me a bit…

Maybe somebody experienced can comment and if somebody has the same issue?

Thank you.

This sounds like your gallbladder, the organ that deals with Fat… I had mine out in 2003, after having severe pain and attacks for months and months. I would suggest seeing your doctor and getting it checked.

Maybe you are eating too much fat. Do you have a cronometer.com account? You can do it free! (There are paid versions but the free version works great).

As long as you are keeping your carbs 20 grams or less, no sugar, getting adequate proteins and some fats, lots of water and electrolytes you are fine. Some people tend to eat way too many fats on Keto. This can put tremendous stress on your gallbladder. I ruined mine from dieting back in 2002-2003, when I lost over 100 pounds in about 8 months. (I gained it all back after the surgery as well…). You should see a doctor and get the gallbladder looked at, though. Best wishes.

Go see a doctor.

If you have gallstones, a ketogenic diet can help dissolve them, but it can get quite painful, if the stones shift about as they shrink. But you are still better off avoiding carbohydrate. If you can avoid having surgery, that is the best outcome, but if you must, ask for a laparoscopic operation, as the trauma to the body is much less that way. When my mother had her gall bladder out, she was back on her feet in a day or two, whereas she had had patients in the old days, who took weeks to recover.

Many people on keto have no problem continuing to eat fat without a gall bladder, and even the ones who do, find that all they need to do is to spread the fat intake out over the day.

I am eating less fats on Keto because of this, was getting severe pain if I ate too many fats.

I had a brief period of discomfort in the same place a couple of months ago when I pressed there. It went away as suddenly as it appeared in a week or so. I never found out what it was. :cowboy_hat_face:

My niece has the same experience. She has been LOW FAT HER ENTIRE LIFE (she is 40 something). Her body just didn’t know what to do with the fat at first. She stayed keto and it did go away in a few months.

I agree with amwassil. If the pain is bad enough that you are asking here on the forum, I am guessing you should go talk to a doc. It may turn out to be nothing, but I would rather have a doc look at it and put my mind at rest than not. Let us know what you find out.

Hi everyone.
Thank you for such a good response.
I am currently living in a foreign country so I cannot go to a doctor.
I have only emergency insurance and I don’t know when I will be returning to my home country…so I am kinda stuck with this. That is why I am asking here. I hope it goes away with time, don’t know what else would I do…
If somebody has something else to add it is much appreciated.

Thank you all.

It might be worth giving a bile salts supplement a try. If you have gallstones, there’s likely to be some reduced bile flow in response to fat. The intestines recirculate bile to the liver so getting ther cycle started again might need a jump start.

I had my gallbladder removed after an attack on a lowfat diet and the salts helped my digestion when I first started.

Thank you for your response.
Do you have a recommendation what exactly, which brand is good?

Th brand I used was Sales Biliares, but I’m sure there are other brands that have the same ingredients. Search for your retailer of choice for ox bile, bile salts, biliares etc.
