PAIN over left kidney?

(Kim Miller) #1

Hello, posting this here, as I don’t know who else to ask. So, keto for years, live it/love it. I have this weird pain over my left kidney. The other day, it felt muscular-maybe? Noticed it while cleaning. Used heat/ice that day. Not too bad yesterday, took my normal power yoga class, no problem. Well, since the wee hours of last night, the area over the kidney is very sensitive to touch. No other symptoms, no fever, pain suggested of UTI with urination or anything. Afraid to go to doc, because the response will be KETO is hurting my kidneys and I don’t want to hear that. I assume if muscular it will subside and if kidney, it will get worse or start showing other symptoms? Any thoughts?

Sounds like a possible kidney stone.

Thanks, Robert for response. So, if so, it will present itself likely and get worse, right? I know the answer to this, but aren’t the naysayers going to say that keto caused the stone, if thats the case?!

It may or may not get worse. My own experience is that the initial pain was the worst pain throughout the process.

There is a ton of stuff that could contribute to the formation of a kidney stone. Like anything, I am sure there are components related to a keto diet that could increase the chances of forming a stone, but basically you just have to drink a ton more water.

Now…getting rid of it will also vary by individual (and by the size of the stone). I have found drinking exponentially more fluids and exercise can often help get a stone to pass sooner rather than later. I once suffered for over a week with a stone (made the big mistake of resting the first few days after diagnosis…which didn’t help things). I finally went out and did a 2-mile jog/run, came home and drank two Shiner Bocks, and the next morning out came the stone.

I’m sure that method will never make it into the New England Journal of Medicine, but it worked for me and one rather large, spiky, painful stone (the doctor also had prescribed me Flomax to make the passage through a little easier as well).

Ditto. Especially as my posture improved after losing weight: my lats weren’t used to standing straight!:joy:

lol. i do yoga 6 days a week, and have for years so not sure its muscular. The area of tenderness to the touch is pretty pin-point as well, like the size of a half dollar. seems weird for muscle. but nothing would surprise me
