Pain in right oblique area after starting keto

I woke up early this morning with sharp pain in my right oblique area. I almost took my self to urgent care, but after having a piece of fruit, 1000 mg of magnesium and some water I started to feel better.

I went back to sleep and woke up later, had a good afternoon and a good workout at the gym, and had dinner. But the pain is starting to return.

I just started on keto two days ago. Perhaps complicating factors is that I had my fourth Covid shot and flu shot Thursday night, before starting keto on Friday. I noticed very dark urine on Friday morning before even beginning my keto, which is very unusual for me.

Even before keto, I eat plenty of avocado, spinach, almonds, pickles, etc. I figure maybe my electrolytes are off, so I bought lite salt today and sprinkled it very generously on my dinner for some extra sodium and potassium.

Urine color is fine, stools are fine, I feel like I am decently hydrated. So I’m not sure if this is just typical “keto flu“ or something more. Anyone with a similar experience?

If you think that cutting your carb intake is the source of the pain, then return to your previous diet. But if you think that the pain is coincidental and has nothing to do with your diet, then see a physician right away.

in truth could be anything? ever happen before, if not what ‘extra stretch or twist’ or body issue you mighta done to you and I know I get 'whacked with knee or this or that and when I broke ribs I can still ‘get a catch’ in a spot in my chest that is WILD and hurts like heck, but more rare as I healed so.

not keto in this form to me, 2 days, nope… bad sleep position. previous hurts from ??

sounds to me more ‘like a gym thing’ maybe?? gym and hurt goes hand in hand if we don’t even realize we injured something ‘til later’ then we get the big OW

hope ya do ok. I would limit exercise, watch me and feel me and maybe take an Ibuprofen and just see what the next days feel like to you.

at age around 30 I ‘hit the gym’ and did alot of chest weight exercises and in 2 days I told my mom I think I was having a heart attack…literally it was that bad…yea the gym LOL those chest pulls, curls and all in that area I focused on darn near killed me but I never put 2 and 2 together cause the darn things hurt SO much. Mom said to me, ya hit a gym? and I was like, omg I did this to me LOL without even thinking of a connection so…hey you need a few days but keto ain’t it.

that is kinda my take on how I think this is going down…hope you are ok soon if you give recovery time ‘when starting new keto eating plan’ vs. also your gym time.

Hmmmm…. I can’t imagine how keto would factor into that. I would see a doctor too.

If fruit and magnesium made it feel better, you’ve answered your own question. Electroyltes and possibly the carbs from fruit. Easy enough to work around

You realize cramping is a known side effect of COVID “vaccines” right? No shortage of that out there.

yea i guess the vaccine may have made it worse, and perhaps it was just muscle cramping (I hope).

im retreating to my old eating habits for now, to see if the side pain goes away completely. if it does, then i will gradually start making my way back towards keto.

im just not sure why i got the bad side pains after eating dinner - i wasn’t thirsty so didn’t drink water, but i liberally seasoned my food with lite salt (sodium/potassium mix). it was 2 fried eggs, maybe 4 - 5 ounces of 80% cooked ground beef, with some stir-fried veggies, and some nuts. so I thought i was doing good getting plenty of electrolytes with dinner

thanks for the well wishes and reply. i regularly go to the gym already, so it wasn’t that. my hope is that i just screwed up on the hydration aspect - i’ve always thought it makes sense to “drink to thirst”, i.e. drink water only if thirsty, since our foods can provide us with plenty of water content on their own.

does “drink to thirst” still apply on keto, or should I be forcing myself to drink more water? I now realize the other aspect of hydration is electrolytes. For someone like me (under 40 male, lean body type, 160 pds), what #'s would make sense daily? maybe something like:

5,000 mg sodium
1000 mg of potassium above what I get from food (i usually have an avocado, spinach, some other veggies, meats, etc.)
1000 mg magnesium l-threonate pills
