Will physical pain (back injury) knock a person out of ketosis and cause weight gain? My husband and I eat a very similar foods on our Keto diet. He recently re-injured his back (he’s had numerous back surgeries, the last included titanium rods) and the doc injected him with an anti inflammatory drug (unsure of the name). Gradually over this two week period he has gained 6 + lbs.
Pain and Ketosis
I’m no doctor, but I’d bet he was injected with a steroid which will certainly knock out the pain, but will otherwise wreak havoc on the body until equilibrium is re-established.
In the meantime I’ll look to see if I can find anything that suggests injectable steroids affecting ketosis, but it seems like too small a group and specific circumstance to be addressed by an RCT.
yeah, if they gave him cortisone or dexamethasone it will cause weight gain. The more insidious side effect is elevated blood glucose levels. Check that if you can.
Sounds like steroids. Get the name of the drug if you can and look it up. I hope he gets better soon. xxx
In general, stress will raise an insulin response with corresponding increases in blood glucose levels. This can be a response to physical or emotional stress. Just writing this post increases mine a little.
However, physical stress or emotional stress can increase the utilization of ketones that are in your system, which will lead to lower blood ketone levels. However, it won’t have any impact on your production of ketones as measure with breath ketones on a Ketonix.
I hope this helps.
Yep, Doc Nally talks about this fairly frequently. Getting injured or getting sick in and of itself can knock you out of ketosis.
Not getting enough sleep can knock you out of ketosis and I have hear that anything that raises your cortisol levels can knock you out of Ketosis, I would think pain might very well raise your cortisol and or cause stress.
