Ox bile mistake

(Mandy) #1

Hey all,

Warning… TMI post.

Roughly 12 weeks in here. A month in I was noticing some stomach discomfort and worse Gerd. Also, I have no gallbladder. I added some supplements to my diet, including ox bile. It didn’t help a lot. I then removed coconut oil and my Gerd drastically improved. I left the supplements. Well fast forward a month. This entire month I’ve been having terrible issues with watery stool. It was really rough. I removed coffee from my diet which seemed to help some. The issue got so bad I started doing some research. I came across an issue called bile salt diarrhea. My symptoms matched completely. I also read that it was a malabsorption of bile and too much of it. I had started ox bile after a tip here that I may need additional help digesting fat without a gallbladder. Several articles stated ox bile can actually make things much worse for some people. I stopped it immediately. My guts have been normal since. This whole time I had blamed my issues on too much fat, coffee, too many veggies when it’s quite possible I was doing this to myself.

Yet again keto has taught me we are all snowflakes. It’s also taught me that my body may be doing just fine on its own without my interference. If I had given it a little time to adjust to this change instead of overloading it with “help”, I may have saved myself a lot of pain. Not to mention my toilet paper budget.

Thanks for reading.

i used it while adapting, and when i feel i need it. so much to learn its crazy and fun too… i did get the runs if i didnt need it, but that confirms im doing good myself in that department yay. keep them handy if you get symptoms of lack of bile. so much individual fine tuning  good you found out. if you get waxy poop maybe try 1 again.

They’re a good thing to use as and when needed, but not ideal for every meal.

I’m going to keep them around for a rainy day. I was taking them before every meal (of course as the bottle suggested). Whoa nelly… What a mistake. Pretty sure it left me severely dehydrated and probably missing some vitamins and minerals. Thanks for the input!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

Yup! A lesson I have to occasionally relearn, BTW! :grinning:

Mandy, totally agree that this is one area where we have to proceed as individuals. It made sense to me that there could be trouble digesting a lot of fat at once, after my gall bladder was removed. I took it easy on the fat in the beginning - this was pre-keto for me - and never felt bad or had problems, so I just quit worrying about it at all.

Now, sometimes things seem a bit too liquid or even “greasy” coming out, but it’s not a constant thing and I just take it as it comes.

I’ve been Keto for 3 months. No gall bladder. I’ve had constipation since the very beginning. I’ve tracked electrolytes like crazy. I know I’m getting enough magnesium. Would Ox bile help with this problem?
