Overheard at work

When do you jump in to counter keto misinformation? I am an intern at a school and 2 teachers in the hall were commenting on someone’s weight loss. Turns out someone else here is on keto and hired a keto coach. I was like hmmm… maybe I could be a mentor. But back to the topic lol…

Then they started talking about how unhealthy it has to be and cholesterol issues must be horrible and that fats have to set up for heart disease. Granted I was just passing by and on my way to see a client, bit a huge part if me wanted to at least set the record straight regarding the myths and misinformation…

What would you have done? If I hear these two talking again, I think I might share. One of them know I lost a lot of weight this past year, so maybe I can be a good ambassador

I am going strong at 115 lost… here is hoping to keep on trucking!

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #2

Do you have bloodwork numbers? “I have lost 115 and my bloodwork is better than it was before,” is hard to argue with.

I try not to give my two cents unless I’m actually part of the conversation (excluding online forums :grinning:). If they had asked you how you lost all of your weight and you responded THEN they started in on how it’s unhealthy, it would have been perfectly ok to dispute it. However, they didn’t so I think you did right thing by biting your tongue.

Forums are a free-for-all and I think we get used to throwing out our opinions on stuff because we have a login and a keyboard. However, real life is a little different and they probably would’ve thought you were rude had you jumped in. Just let them be misinformed and you KCKO and continue to look and be fabulous!

Keep a picture of the old you in your wallet. If the subject comes up again, say, “Here’s the old me. I’ve lost 115 pounds!” I’d listen to you if you said that.

It can be hard at times. The people who are at work, have seen my weight loss, but it’s taken 6 years. Others who knew me back then and haven’t seen me are shocked. But we know plenty of new people who never knew me when I was much heavier.

Hard call.

It is all about you and do you really want true involvement?

For me personally I would walk by, hear this and think about it fuming for a day or 2 and leave it…….but if you are one that truly wants to be a formidable change to this huge topic in life…then you go for it

I found unless you hit them with big info…they frown on it. And do they even want to research that big info you gave them? Most are not interested either so???

This one really boils down to you and what you want to accomplish in life regarding your truths.

Wish you nothing but the best of luck if you move forward

If they are talking in my presence, I would totally pull an “um, actually” with them. Kindly let them know about your weight, how you feel, and your current health stats if you have them (cholesterol, blood sugar, insulin, etc…)

(John) #7

Would depend on how well I knew them. Just total strangers, I would pass by. Especially if they are of a higher rank/status in the workplace. Just depends on the situation.

I actually do have numbers to back it up - my LDL, HDL, and total cholesterol have never looked this good, after 13.5 months on a keto diet and about 115 pounds down myself. I am on a statin (but was well before I started keto), and my doctor just said I could cut the dose in half. So it is not a guaranteed “your cholesterol will go crazy” diet at all.

(Marianne) #8

I’d let it go and not say anything. The seed has been planted, and now they know about keto through this other co-worker. When people get truly despondent (like I did), they will remember and maybe investigate. It may take years, but if they are really curious about how others have “lost all that weight,” they may investigate. I read Yahoo news on a regular basis and there are always articles on there about keto and various success stories. It is starting to catch on.

(Susan) #9

Awesome, Carolyn, and yes you would make a great Keto ambassador. I just wonder if they are too head strong to listen? grrrr -but best wishes =).

(Murphy Kismet) #10

I would say they’re partly right. Keto does your cholesterol…during the first six months but if these people are like most scientists, they’ll see this rise, and assume it’ll continue to rise. Whereas we know that most people’s cholesterol will stabilize around the 6-month mark.

But they won’t let a course happen on its own to see the true end result. No, they panic.

#11

I wouldn’t say anything unless I knew them well it would be kind of butting into a conversation.
People who know me will already would know either to or not to mention Keto or fasting to me…I tend not to know when to shutup …

#12

Let them come to you. They are not ready yet.

(Katie the Quiche Scoffing Stick Ninja ) #13

I don’t mean to sound rude, because it’s coming from a good place, but casually interrupting people’s conversations when you think you know better is absolutely condescending, and if anyone did that to me (ready to hear the knowledge or not) I would disregard them.

(Carolyn aka stokies) #14

Well, that would be why I asked this theoretical question… To learn of others’ perspectives. I know these people and it wasn’t a secluded conversation. I didn’t interrupt or interject, and was just curious other’s POV…

I have no filter and would have stopped and set them straight but that’s me. I talk to everyone. I literally asked a guy a couple weeks ago if he enjoyed his bagel more than his foot they were talking about potentially amputating due to diabetic wound healing problems. Our conversation ended with him asking me to write down the name of Dr. Fungs book for him. I think I was a preacher of some sort in a past life. Lmao.
Edit…oh and as for the fat is bad for cholesterol thing…I just had my 3 month lipid panel and my triglycerides went down from 2.98 to 0.85. So from double the number they want it to be less than to optimal.

(Ian Patey) #16

It helps with data. I shut down the naysayers at work by openly sharing my lipid profiles. Can’t argue with the science when Trigs plummet and HDL increases.

I"d probably treat it like any other conversation I overhear : I keep it moving unless I am asked for my opinion (which I may not even give if I feel the audience is looking to argue rather than listen or learn)

(Wandering) #19

Would sweep the knee and do a take down, put one of them into a rear naked choke and scream “Keto is GOOD! Say it! SAY IT!!” until they said Keto is good. j/k

OMG - thank you for the much-needed laugh
