Out of ketosis.. so quickly!

ketosis

Hi there,
It’s been a few months I am trying to stick to the Keto diet despite hard time to get into ketosis and loose weight.
I eat a very low carb diet however I have realized that I get into ketosis by fasting for 24h only, which is fine as I do some detox fasting days once in a while.
However, I get out of ketosis as soon as I eat again!
As an example of what I am dealing with, I fasted on Tuesday. I checked my ketosis level on Wednesday afternoon (keto strips) and I was on it (a lovely purple color ).
Then I ate again on Weds night (hard boiled eggs with cheese with a spoon of peanut butter - pretty keto friendly right?!).
This morning I checked my ketosis level and I was already out of ketosis!!
This is so decouraging… as I feel I have to fast to stay into ketosis and then loose fat, which is not what I want to do.
Any thoughts, advices or any similar experiences you’d like to share with me?
Thanks a lot!
Cheers
Sab

Urine strips are a poor indicator of being in a state of ketosis. What they tell you is that you are spilling ketones in your urine which can happen simply if you are dehydrated. If your body is using ketones efficiently for fuel, you are less likely to see them in your urine. A better gauge would be to either invest in a blood ketone monitor, or simply follow a VLC diet of <50g total carbs per day (for some it has to be <20g) and you will, by default, end up in ketosis once you burn through your glycogen stores. Never check the urine strips in the morning, after meals, or after exercise. Urine strips are not very accurate and even less so at these times. I only use them just before dinner and just before bed.

Here are a few things to consider:

First, being in ketosis does not automatically trigger weight loss. In fact, it’s possible to be in ketosis and gain weight.

Second, counting calories isn’t necessary, but calories do matter. While there are exceptions (mostly healthy young males), for most folks, LC isn’t an all you can eat diet.

Third, some people are metabolically deranged enough that some type of fasting regime is required to lose weight. Long term yo-yo dieters and woman are over represented in this group.

Fourth, urine strips are notoriously unreliable. If you want to track ketones, get a blood meter.

Or after breathing. They’re mostly rubbish.

Absolutely all of those things.
