I’m new here and still doing a lot of reading, shopping & researching. So far I have been using swerve but came across Big Tree Farms organic coconut sugar at Costco. Is it ok or no? Serving size is 1 tsp, and has 4g carbs (same as swerve … but also total sugars is 4g. Help?! The price is way better but is it worth it
Organic golden Coconut sugar
Hi Liz,
Welcome!! I’m no expert, but I personally would stay away from something that had 4g of sugars per tsp. Swerve has 4g of sugar alcohol. I believe the difference is that sugar alcohols don’t raise your blood glucose. However, some sugar alcohols can cause an insulin response in some people.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong here.
I would not use either of the products you mention. I don’t use much sweeteners, mostly in small amounts cooking. Never in my coffee. I use Erythritol and Allulose. I think I am going to purchase some pure sucralose. It’s 300x as sweet as sugar so I think it might spike the flavor of the others I use which are about 70% as sweet as sugar. Then I will have a 1:1 blend for direct substitution in cooking. Erythritol is zero carb and used by many here, a few people get gastric distress from it but I don’t myself. It’s an individual thing. Some people like xylitol, stevia, or others. It can take some experimentation. But you don’t want to blow 4 carbs on a tsp of sugar substitute.
Pre-Keto I used organic coconut sugar and had far fewer negative reactions to it than I have ever experienced with artificial sweeteners or Erythritol (allergic reaction). I did not have a noticeable insulin or blood glucose reaction either (nor did it cause any cravings) BUT and it’s a big but lol, I used very very small amounts at a time. I would make a cashew butter caramel sauce and use about 1/2 tspn because the granules were bigger and didn’t dissolve like regular sugar so quickly, the flavor was very present and didn’t need much. Many are super quick to bash natural sweeteners, however, it is totally individualized how it will effect your body and only you can decide what if any sweetener, artificial or organic in nature will work for you
