Optimal blood sugar level

(Florencia) #1

Hi everyone,
I tried to find this info on old posts but cannot find exactly what I am searching for.
I do not measure my ketones, and I have read different things about optimal BS level while on ketosis.
Can anyone shed some light on how much my blood sugar should read when I am on a ketogenic state?
I have heard below 80 is good but also that between 60 and 70 is the ideal.
Thanks,

I’ve heard it said that BS in the 70’s is a fair indication BUT if you keep your carbs to 20 gms then that’s usually enough to guarantee ketosis.

Thank you Safi

I am usually in ketosis but my blood sugar has never (to my knowledge) gone below the high 80’s.

Really? Interesting…

In fact I just tested and ketones read .7 but my BG is 100!!

Also I’ve read that 83 or under is very good.

It’s fine to keep an eye on blood sugar. But if you want to get a better overall picture, consider an A1C test.

My blood sugar only drops into the 60s if I fast for multiple days. Here’s an example of a month’s worth of data:

To get US units, multiply by 18. So 5.3 = 95.4.

Blood glucose isn’t directly related to being in ketosis. When I started I had high BG numbers (T2D - 7-9 mmol/L), but they’ve steadily dropped over a matter of a couple of months (haven’t been over 5.0 mmol/L in a week). Your BG will vary depending on how insulin resistant you are as well as how many carbs your eating.

HI Brennan,
Well all I do is check my blood sugar since here it is not easy to get the needed machine for ketones measurements.
I am back on ketones diet for 2 weeks now.
My carb intake is 20gr a day and I do IF, 16/8.
This morning at 14hrs into my fast I was at 71 for my blood sugar level.
I heard that Ketones are also not easy to measure, are they really more accurate to figure out if you are in ketosis ?
Thank you,

BS level is all I have ever used to control my diet…guess i should get my ketones measure too maybe…

Thanks Brian

That really should be enough to ensure nutritional ketosis. If you’re only eating this way for general health or weight loss & it’s working for you then there really is no pressing need to measure ketones. If you’re doing it to treat a serious medical condition then it can be a different story :slightly_smiling_face:

Lucky me no health issues except for horrible migraines once a month…thank you!

My migraines have lessened in frequency since I started keto - keeping my sodium levels up helps a lot.

Mine are hormonal as I only have them around my periods so it is hard to try to fix…if i ever will be able to… but lets see…i stopped birth control as well when i started keto, i believe it is more harmful than good.

You might find this short video interesting. Mine are both hormonal & weather induced but I do have fewer of them now.

thanks will check it out!

Safi is right you should be good where you are with carbs and IF.

Keto should help to balance hormones, hopefully you’ll see improvement (less severity or duration) with your migraines.
