Only 5lb loss first month

(Brienne Howell) #1

I’m feeling fantastic on Keto and today marks one month in!! I admit I’m a little discouraged as after the initial 7 lb loss the first week I put back on a few lbs (water weight I’m sure) and now am at 6 lb loss at this point.

I know part of the problem is that I like to have a glass of wine in the evenings. Well, I’ve cut it down to a few nights a week but I do see that my ketosis stalls when drinking. I also only want to lose 15-20lbs (starting weight 155lbs and now 149 today). I track my macros with MFP and know I’m not going over protein, carbs etc and I eat plenty of healthy fats so thinking it must be slow because of not needing to lose as much weight and also the alcohol but wanted to know if anyone else has had a slow weight loss on keto and if others still can enjoy a few days of drinking and still having results?

Thanks for any words of encouragement:)

I am in the same weight range as you and have the same goal of losing 15-20 pounds (I’m 5’4"). It’s been slow going, so I am trying to incorporate IF and to cut back on the drink. I’ve shifted a few pounds since then. On a positive note, my allergies are nearly gone and the migraines I get when I skip breakfast are gone (though I still get mild auras, which is strange), so I am quite happy!

A few things:

  1. The keto “way of eating” is used for WAY more than weight loss. There are things happening in your body, and you’ve already experienced some of those benefits  Sometimes weight stalls while your body is healing, and the fact that you feel great is an indication of this.

  2. Unless you’re about 3 feet tall, you really don’t have a ton of weight to lose, as you’ve indicated. Many of the folks who lose a bonkers amount of weight at first have a LOT of extra weight. You already know this though- like you said, not needing to lose as much weight can cause slower loss

  3. I don’t know much about the alcohol, but I think for you it is going to come down to which is worth more to you. If you notice that it is keeping you out of ketosis, then you’re delaying your fat adaptation every time you have a glass. If that’s okay for you, no problem! If it isn’t, then I’d suggest cutting out the wine entirely until you’re fat adapted (usually 6-8 weeks in) and then seeing what happens when you add it back in.

By the way, 6 lbs is not nothing… that is anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight you want to lose total! My goal is to lose 80 lbs… that means I’d have to lose at least 20 lbs just to get to your percentage in weight reduction. You’ve done some awesome work  Keep calm, and keto on!

You know how hard it is to lose one pound! Losing 5 is quite an accomplishment! Lose the booze and you can do it! Drinking stalls my weight loss for a whole week every time I have one!

alcohol consumption derails weightloss, period.

All this makes sense completely! And the more I research keto and seeing the health benefits overall I want to keep up this way of eating as long as I can. My gut is telling me it likes how I’m eating now and that’s enough right there haha. But yes, I think I need to cut back even more on the alcohol if I want to see the actual weight loss benefits of keto it seems… either way I’m so happy I’ve made this change!

Best of luck to you on your keto journey:)

I’m sure that’s why so I’ll cut it out till I get to where I want to be! And yes, still happy I’ve lost the weight I have and trying not to stress too much about the number on the scale:)
