Can anyone tell me if onions are a no no on low carb/keto diet please as I am getting mixed results - thank you
Onions!
Onions are relatively high ins carbs with 8-9 g per 100g, so I would use them rather sparingly.
Yeah they are pretty high but itās something Iām not willing to even consider giving up. Iād rather limit the intake with something else so I can eat onions
Like all veggies that grow under ground, they are higher carb, but we donāt tend to eat the same volume we do of green veggies, so in reasonable amount isnāt usually a problem.
They are a bit high in carbs but who wants to give up that kind of flavor? I use them somewhat sparingly when I can. A couple of other things to try would be shallots and/or granulated onion. Both are also relatively carby but youāll likely use much less that you would a yellow onion for example.
Onions, like other spices are meant to be used in small amounts to add a variety of flavors to our meals. I often use half an onion to flavor a huge casserole that we eat off of for several days. As for using fresh, vs dried onion powder or flakes, I use both, but for those who think dried onions are lower carb than fresh ones, understand it takes LOTS of chopped up onions to make a small amount of dried flakes. I have dehydrated onions, and many other other foods. Dried onions are perfect for lots of things, but treat them just like fresh onions when considering usage and carb counts.
Most of the onions Iāve grown form bulbs on the surface not underground. Some types like walking onions form the bulbs at the top of the plant two or more feet above the ground.
I just came here to say āShallots are a better optionā but you beat me to it!
Yea, Onions are what I called a āyellow foodā in my mental keto list⦠somethings just need them for the flavor, but Iām much more sparing with them than I used to be⦠which works out, a little onion goes a long way!
Iām going to have to try shallots⦠I know I have had them, perhaps that is something I will need to add to my list of things to keep around.
I use them moderately just like tomatoes.
Like, pre-keto Iād maybe use like 1-1.5 onions for a recipe that would feed like 4 people. Now I use a quarter of an onion for the same amount of people.
They are very tasty and full of flavor so you luckily donāt need much.
You are confusing me with onions vs. shallots. Google says shallots are actually almost double the amount of carbs?
According to myfitnesspal
1 cup of raw onions 14.9gm carbs
1 tablespoon onion powder 5gm carbs
In our household we are very light onion users so I donāt worry too much about it. But I have given up eating/ordering anything with grilled onions on the top as you tend to get a large portion that way. I will miss that treat. I guess I could plan them into my day ahead of time. Planning really does allow you the ability to be more flexible.
Iāve been using the green tops of green onions. I assume (but donāt know) less starch and sugar but most of the flavor and I assume (but donāt know) probably more phyto nutrients. I just keep topping them and they regrow new green tops to be harvested again. does any body know if they really do add flavor without all of the carbs?
The green tops of scallions have fewer carbs.
Carb counts from the internet:
onion type - total carb/fiber - per 100 grams.
green onion, tops only 5.6/3.5
Young green onion 7.34/2.6
bulb onion. 10.11/1.4
red onion 11.6/1.6
I also grow them, and as Brian said, I just keep cutting off the green tops, and the base keeps putting out new leaves. The leaves can be a little tougher than a diced bulb, so just chop them up. They have very good flavor and they add a bit of green to a dish or salad.
