One unhappy vegan

(Renee Slaughter) #1

Got a friend who is TD2 like me. We started our journey to get rid of our TD2. So we were properly educated in the vegan lifestyle from the movie What the Health? I’m not sure what her A1C was but mine was 5.8 in August last year. We shared recipes, were totally excited over new ways to cook. She slowly reduced her grains, potatoes and refined carbs. As did I. While her cravings reduced, mine increased . I was hungry most of the time and unhappy. And I gained 10 lbs. Finally in Dec 2017 I went back to keto, found the Dudes from Keto Christina YouTube channel and haven’t looked back. My friend has dry skin, pain from arthritis and reduced resilience. I told her eat more fat, you’re not eating enough fat or calories. So she’s trying to eat more calories. Not fat. Today she got her A1C results 5.9 still prediabetic. While mine is 5 3. She is fat phobic due to all the lies about fat out there. So I will keep on floating through life like the butterfly I am all thanks to keto. No more arthritic pain, increased joy in life, better attitude and yes I get to eat steak.

Glad keto is working for you. It can be done as vegan or vegetarian. But you gotta have those good fats. I hope for her sake your friend sees your good results and alters her diet.

All the best to you on your Journey.

January 2 this year, I too decided to try the vegan - HCLF WOE. By the first week of February I had gained 5 pounds, felt horrible, bonked in the afternoons, and was hungry all the time - eating 4-6 times per day. I am pre-diabetic.

I am now entering my 4th week of keto. I have dropped 8.5 pounds and this week I am not feeling hungry between meals and find a BPC completely satisfies me in the morning until lunch time - even with a heavy cardio workout before noon.

In addition my BP is in a normal range in the mornings, hopefully I notice a positive change during the day as it does go up to hypertension levels in the afternoon.

Did I mention sleep… I am typically an insomniac. I now sleep soundly and require less sleep (7 hours max when I needed 9 plus an afternoon nap when eating vegan) - although the last few nights I wake up to go to the bathroom.

I feel like I can focus better and do not feel brain fogginess.

So far I LOVE keto. I am anxiously waiting to go for bloodwork but will wait until I have been ketoing for 4-6 months because I am subconsciously worried about the cholesterol thing.

Anyways I couldn’t agree with you more! KCKO

I too was worried about cholesterol. Heard the 2 Dudes podcast about it. And was a little relieved. Looked up Dave Feldman on YouTube and tried to follow his lectures but the science was over my head until this 30 min video on YouTube. I got then and stopped worrying. https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=4s&v=y8pybQjVeiQ
Our current view of cholesterol isn’t how it works. So give it a watch. The title “Its energy not cholesterol”.

Here’s to you, Renee!!!

And, if you haven’t already checked it out, the book “The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability” by Lierre Keith you might enjoy it… it’s beautifully written, all about her journey towards more of a paleo-keto way of eating. She was vegan for over 20 years and is one of the many amazing souls featured in the keto documentary The Magic Pill.

And maybe this will help your friend Renee - I happened to come across this tonight. Virta Health has a great article about successful keto vegetarianism and veganism, along with a downloadable cookbook here: https://blog.virtahealth.com/vegan-vegetarian-low-carb-keto/

Here’s probably the best website to refute all the Vegan nonsense.

Beyondveg.com

The great big cholesterol hoax is what led me here, in a roundabout way. I too am a former veggie, did it for two years or so thinking it was healthy. Yeah… Um, it’s really not. Kudos to anyone who thrives on that but my body most definitely does not.

A particularly horrifying but humorous read is a book called the Meat Fix. The guy was vegan for decades and had terrible health issues until he tried eating meat again.

Definitely worth a read. Thx.

Thanks Mart. Will send her the link.

Dr. Ted Naiman’s take on veg diets is that a takes a ton of supplements to make up for missing nutrients. Here’s the specific part where talks about his patients:

Maybe get her to watch Dr. Ben Bikman on YouTube. He is really good at explaining the need for Keto and the connection of glucagon and ketones in the body.

This might help her see what doctors are saying rather than random articles or pundits on TV.

Good luck, I’m facing a similar problem with my loved ones.
