On & Off Keto - Does Body Fat % Make a Difference?

(Kenneth) #1

My ultimate question of this post: Is weight loss on Keto different at 15% vs 35% body fat?
Why can I not break through a plateau?

I started Keto April 1, 2018 and was scrupulous about it for my first five months; I measured GKI (August Chart below) and tracked macros. I had great success loosing 30lbs of my 40lbs goal (200lbs to 170lbs); putting me at 15% body fat (measured by Inbody570). Even with some moderate exercise, 3-day water fasts and consistently hitting very high ketone levels … I hit a plateau that I could not break through. I am so grateful for the success I have had and to be where I am, but a goal is a goal for a reason.

In September, work and vacation took me to Spain and Italy, where I willfully belly-flopped into cannolis, espresso, pizza and lots of wine. (btw…coming off Fat Adaptation was worse than the keto-flu). Once back from vacation, I moderately went back on keto and fully fat adapted again; faithful but casual. Maintaining ketone levels between 1-2 (aproximately a +/- 4 GKI). Over the holidays I was more low carb than Keto and had my share of desserts and wine.

Today, I am still at 170lbs and I really want to break through the August plateau and burn the last 10lbs of body fat. The big question … is there something about the body wanting to balance out at 15% body fat? Does burning Fat at these lower levels become exponentially more difficult? Am I doing something wrong? How do I burn these last 10lbs of body fat?

Thanks for your thoughts and advice!

The last few pounds are always the hardest to shift. There are nurmerous threads on these forums about breaking plateaus.

Try alternate day fasting.
Load up today on keto foods more than usual. Last meal at 6 PM Sunday
Fast all the next day. Monday
Eat More than normal on Tuesday. Last meal at 6 PM.
Fast all day Wednesday.
Eat more than you normally would on Thursday. Last meal at 6 PM
Fast all day Friday.
Sometimes this will break the plateau.
I am looking for an alternate day fasting partner for next week. Join me for accountability.

From my own personal experience, losing the last lbs are harder than the first 50. I’m probably in the 16-18% bf range. About 1/2 of where I started. I’m having to ask myself “why” do I want to or feel like I need to lose more? Is it a fear of slowing the fat loss flywheel? At the end of the day it comes down to keeping the weight off and not reverting back to an unhealthy lifestyle. It seems easier to keep moving forward with a weight loss goal than to reach a point of mental comfort and say to myself ok I’m happy right here. It’s a battle that I wage daily. “It’s never good enough” is a real thing for sure.

OK I’m game; I’ll give this a try. However, the first day I am free to fast is Tuesday. So, I’ll start then.

Thanks for the advice!

Good thanks I need the support I’ll be starting This evening. I’ll give you my weigh-in from this morning, and then every morning including Saturday morning.
In the past I have seen, doing this type of fasting, two steps down and then one step up then two steps down then one step up in weight …more or less.

165 lbs. Ate a lot of carbs yesterday, (my birthday and off the wagon). Likely holding some water from the carbs. So let the feast begin!!!

Frank,
I think I am taking a good approach to this; I am thinking more in terms of metabolic set point. Effectively, I want to push my body fat down to 10-12% and hold it there for a several weeks, then relax to a keto-maintence lifestyle and allow the body to rebound and settle back at 12-15% range. This is where I would be optimally healthy for my medium build, 5’9" frame.

Your point about healthy eating … well, I think I have as much mental health work to do as I did physical. Every week seems to reveal a some unhealthy psychology or behavior that exists (or existed) in relation to food. This keto program has been a journey of self knowledge too. So, keto can help us be less crazy too!

Everyone is different. My husband, when he sticks to keto, continues to drop fat well below 13% effortlessly. In fact he breaks keto regularly in order to just maintain since he’s worried about getting too skinny. I’m convinced his body just hasn’t reached it’s keto set point yet, but he worries he’ll waste away. :unamused:
