Ok been keto 8+ months lost 25 lbs but I’ve been stalled for over a month. And the last week or so I’m ravenous. My macros are 5/25/70 and cal 1600. I can’t keep from eating 200-600 Cal extra but I stay under 20 carbs. Thoughts? Suggestions on breaking my stall and killing my hunger?
Omg what is happening
Seems like your body is trying to tell you it needs something. Maybe try upping the fat and/or calories.
Have you tried what Carl recently mentioned on podcast–eating one large keto meal to the point of being nearly nauseated?
What do your carbs consist of? Anything sweet or are they coming from green leafy vegs?
Carbs come from veggies, almond butter occasionally and dairy. I am a t2 diabetic on 20 units a day.
salads made of spinach or lettuce with vinegar/mustard based dressings with stevia or 0 cal sweetner mixed in.
Drink big cups of chicken broth after meals
have a diet coke or 2
chew SF gum
Try SF jello after meals
Instead of coffee with cream drink coffee with a splash of unsweetened almond milk with sweetener and Himalayan pink salt
Eat less dairy besides butter and ghee
make a smoothie with
some kind of thickner (Psylum,Guar gum,Xthan gum,Fiber) + Stevia or sweetner + Protein powder + unsweetend almond milk and ice
drink big cups of warm green tea or bone broth after meals
Eat more nuts and less nut butters
try wrapping up every meat you eat inside a butter leaf lettuce for tacos all day which are more filling
put stevia on everything
make your food spicy
DRINK ALOT OF FLUID IN A DAY
yup thats all I know,Try it…it works!
I’m no expert but all those artificial sweeteners would be terrible for t2d. If you are hungry try eating more fat… limit eating to a smaller eating window. Try 2-4 hours, eating throughout the day is disastrous for type 2d.
I would not limit calories or use percentages. Keep carbs under 20g, calculate your protein requirements, 1g per day per kilo of lean body mass (some people do .8 - 1.5 if particularly athletic), eat fat until 80% full.
Assuming it is possible while on insulin (I have no idea), try to vary your consumption, mix it up as Megan Ramos says so your body does not get used to a particular level of consumption
If you are on insulin that might be causing the stall and the hunger. In the presence of insulin the body cannot utilize fat. Is your insulin properly adjusted? Can you talk to your doctor about reducing your insulin and perhaps moving on to metformin instead? Of course do not change your medication without speaking to your doctor
Same thing happened to me at the 7 month mark. My analysis based on things Richard has said was that my fat cells had became healthier & more efficient while my basal insulin rate was still too high to allow access to my bodyfat. So I started fasting more regularly to try geadually driving my insulin down. And I eat more fats on feasting days to try to quell that returned hunger. Since Nov I’ve only lost about 5 pounds but I went down 2 sizes so something else was still happening regardless of the scale. (I do not exercise.)
I’m on metformin and victoza as well. I’ve been trying to wean off insulin but blood sugars go up if I go below 10 units twice a day. My doctor is aware and is super supportive of my Keto journey. I’m free to drop insulin whenever but I’m scared to because without it my fasting sugar goes up to about 150. I think I might just need to intermittent fast.
I’ve seen recommendat ion for fat cycling… up your fat intake by a good 30+ g for a couple days, then normal for a couple days, it does seem to help (I’ve tried twice)
Are you sure you are T2 and not perhaps 1.5? No expert but I might inquire of your doctor.
I did read “Diabetes Unpacked” recently and it is a book with chapters written by different experts. Chapter 4 is written by Dr. Robert Cywes who is a bariatric surgeon but talked about how he gets his patients off of insulin if they are complying with a keto diet. On page 83 of chapter 4 he talks about how he uses fasting BG as a guide to lower insulin but he emphasizes that close monitoring by a physician is critical. Basically he says that if your morning BG is 140 or under for a certain number of days he cuts your insulin dose in half or something like that, I read it awhile ago and it is not something I am doing so I may be mistaken about the numbers
I assume you have read Jason Fung’s work at IntensiveDietaryManagement.com, his blog is quite interesting. As a T2 I would read it from the beginning starting back in 2013
If you can get your doctor’s support for it, I’d consider trying fasting without insulin. You’d need to watch it close to make sure your blood sugar doesn’t get too crazy. But with luck and maybe the right amount of dosing of your other medications maybe your blood sugar wouldn’t rise too high and then come down and stabilize at a healthy level for a while. And with even more luck suspending the insulin might lower/reset your hunger. I had fatty liver and fasting fixed it fast. Restoring liver health makes everything easier/better.
Dude you’re a guy. 1600 calories is where I barely start at. I usually eat 1800 to 2000 every other day. I’m a post menopausal woman. You’re not eating enough. I won’t repeat what others here have said. Yeah what they said. Eat more.
I know it sounds gross and childish but I put stevia on pork rinds and it was like eating kettle corn
