Omega 3 supplement question

(Garry (Canada)) #1

I have never supplemented with Omega 3s, so my research is minimal. I’m hoping you guys can offer some advice.
My local Costco has these on sale this week and I’m interested in purchasing them.
I’m not sure what is or isn’t good as far as these Omega 3’s go.
Could you please give me some feedback on whether these are acceptable to purchase or should I look for other options/brands/particulars?
Thanks,

I’m thinking about adding a supplement of this as well. I currently take fish oil, but upon googling omega 3’s I’m realizing that most of my foods are not very high in omega 3’s.

I’m also looking into incorporating more chia seeds into my diet as they are the highest in omega3’s

Hi
These are the only fish oil pills that have not caused the fish burps…I get them at whole foods but look around, they are probably less expensive elsewhere.

I use Omega 3 by Nature Made, 1200mg.
I think I may have bought them at Costco but not certain. I don’t see a problem with what you’ve linked to.

its unnecessary to waste money on this supplement if you merely eat oily fish (salmon, mackerel) and eggs a couple times a week.

supplements are more for SAD eating people

Not sure about the Eggs… I saw your post and researched and what I’ve read says that Omega 3 enriched eggs vary in Omega 3 and are not consistent. Thoughts?

Flax seeds have more Omega 3s than Chia Seeds per ounce, but both of those are mostly ALA Omege 3s, not DHA. What we primarily want is DHA. The human body is capable of converting ALA to DHA, but last I checked the rate was about 1%.

Fish and other seafood, on the other hand, primarily have DHA (as well as various other animal sources of Omega 3). So, even though it may be less omega 3 per ounce to eat a salmon fillet, it’s more DHA Omega 3 (and while I use chia seeds from time to time in recipes, I’d usually prefer to eat 6 oz of salmon than 1 oz of chia seeds).

@Jason_v Fish is expensive in many areas, and harder to get into the diet regularly (coworkers tend to object to the lingering scent of most fish in the microwave). Fish Oil, while not super cheap itself, can be less costly for getting Omega 3 and easier to take.

I think I’d take two to three of those a day based on the recommendations of Larry McCleary in the Brain Trust Diet book.

Chia Seeds, like Flax only provide ALA. You use ALA to make EPA and DHA. Women convert it better because estrogen helps.
Conversion ranges are:
ALA - EPA: 8-20%
ALA - DHA: 1-9%

Marine sources that are rich in EPA and DHA are superior choices… you’d have to down a lot of Chia or Flax to get 2g of combined EPA-DHA.

Apparently, the way that krill have omega 3 makes them a superior source with a lower effective dose.

When I was taking a whole swathe of supplements, I soon learned that you get what you pay for.

So I am now very careful to research the brand as much as the type of supplement.

When I was looking for Omega 3s i was astonished at the range, the different claimed ‘efficacies’ and the different sales techniques used to criticise the competition. Lol.

I ended up buying good quality krill oil (but there is some rubbish about), but then I resented the price so much i went for cheaper lower potency the next time.

Bottom line: I’m not sure that supermarket discount supplements will do you much good.

OP Update:

Been taking 2 capsules with my lunch each of the past 5 days now. My body has accepted them without any issues at all. As far as the “burps”, I have not had any… perhaps because I take them with my lunch. (which is my biggest meal of the day)
Just a note of caution before buying…These capsules are HUGE.
