I tend to only eat when I’m hungry and sometimes that results in OMAD.
I noticed that the time of day that happens will vary for me and that got me to wondering, for those who regularly eat OMAD, is there a specific time of day do you eat or just eat when you feel hungry?
OMAD, When Do You Eat?
I usually eat about 2:00 of 3:00. And that’s it.
But…
If I am out and about at breakfast time, I will go to a breakfast diner and chow down on a big omelette. Interestingly, this often leads to a second or even third meal later in the day. go figure.
The scales never budge and everything goes back to normal the next day.
That’s been my typical time also. Not intentionally though. It’s just when I felt hungry.
Now today I got hungry around noon so I ate then and just didn’t feel hungry again the rest of the day.
The old time farming communities that I grew up in would: wake up in the dark, drink a coffee, go out for an hour or so’s work. Back for breakfast with the family then continue. Seems like a perfectly logical way of starting your day, despite it having become fashionable to say that “breakfast ISN’T the most important meal of the day”. Recent research shows that it probably is.
I do the same, except I go for a run following a program, my lovely wife usually has breakfast waiting for me. Homemade bacon, three eggs, mushrooms, coconut bread and oil. And COFFEE.
I am sorry, I just couldn’t answer it quickly but if someone just wants that, it’s somewhere between 3-6 pm, ideally at 4-5pm. That’s it.
I don’t always do OMAD, to put it lightly… But this week makes me optimistic about getting the hang of a tiny eating window, I do it well now. But I never can do it all the time, sometimes TMAD days happen for various reasons. I used to be unable to do TMAD but now I have such days too and don’t go over 2, it’s wonderful, I disliked my 5MAD carni days, stupid easy satiation…
When, it depends on when I get hungry and some other things.
My “ideal” eating time is about 4-5pm on OMAD but only if I don’t get hungry early as I don’t stand hunger. I do my best to avoid the annoying or even troublesome types of hunger and OMAD keeps me the most satiated (while I eat the least I can, I need that).
But 2MAD works well if my food choices are really good and sometimes carnivore easy satiation kicks in yesterday my lunch was really tiny so I ate most of my food at dinner instead (normally a tiny first meal triggers 5MAD but things changed, I can’t express how pleased I am). But I rarely avoid hunger until 5-6pm so my OMAD days tend to be late lunches. An early lunch has minimal chances as I tend to get hungry after some time, 8-10 hours after my OMAD sized meat is typical. I need to be asleep then, sleep makes me perfectly satiated again.
2-3pm was my natural time for my first meal all my life (except when I was a baby and I don’t remember my early childhood. I just remember hating breakfast with a passion because I can’t wait long between meals without OMAD… So I got hungry soon. And I don’t need food out of bed, it feels so unnatural…).
3pm is when our little family lunch happens (I mean, we are 2 persons, the lunch is 1000+ kcal for both of us, not like that’s big) on workdays so it’s my natural eating time. I only skip lunch if I am not hungry yet, at all (the freshly made food and the habit of eating together is strong, I usually need good satiation to say no) but it caused some problems for me when I realized 2 meals are way too many calories for me to have any chance to lose fat so I went for OMAD. 3pm was too early so I got hungry again, quite late so I had another not small meal and overate. But I couldn’t wait longer. Now I know, it was the carbs. Even on keto, even on carnivore. Maybe not the carbs but dairy and many eggs, they don’t satiate me well. I am fine with bigger focus on meat so I am hopeful I finally can lose fat after a several year long stall.
But the chill and the higher satiation, convenience… I sooo love my OMAD days.
Oh, even if I get hungry earlier, I don’t eat properly until 3pm. I just grab some fatty bites and they help. Unless I really get hungry for more but that hardly happens to me. On workdays. Weekends may be different. Sometimes I eat at noon (definitely not OMAD), sometimes at 3pm. Weekend is my more relaxed time, both food choices and IF wise.
I become a gremlin after 6pm so I try to avoid eating after that nowadays. I enjoy my food way better late but it wouldn’t end well. Bigger hunger, bigger appetite, inevitable overeating, nope.
Tiny things like a few drops of cream in a coffee or a tiny butter doesn’t count, sometimes I have that early too. I rarely do very pure OMAD, a few calories happen earlier or later. But I aim to do it properly if I can. I have been wanting to quit coffee since long anyway That brings the cream.
I couldn’t care less what is fashionable, I WON’T ruin my day just because some people has a different opinion. Not even if everyone else has. I tried breakfast all my childhood and hated and suffered from it all the time. Since I quit it, it’s WAY better. I am incompatible with breakfast, it’s simple and glaringly obvious. If I eat a meal, I will eat in every 1-3 hours until I had enough for the day - but if 8-10 hour passes after my last meal, I get hungry so it stops being my last meal. Breakfast inevitable brings overeating but worse things as well.
Of course breakfast isn’t for everything, humans are different!
But I am fine with people thinking whatever about me. Main thing I can make the good choice for myself (Not like I ever could have the willpower to force-feed myself in the morn…)
But I must say I did have breakfasts, huge ones at some point in the summer. At 11am. That’s the earliest time I ever were able to eat something by my own will under normal circumstances. I run around shopping before. But just because I am hiking for 4 hours after waking, I won’t get magically able to eat yet, I need to wait until 2-3pm at least. And I feel so lucky I naturally wait until then. It’s not trivial but I can overeat in OMAD, don’t need the help of zillion meals an early breakfast would trigger.
I usually do OMAD 5 days each week, I eat at dinner 6:00 PM. I’m not a snack guy, so I don’t eat anything except water in the morning or lunch. But sometimes, I drink a cup of coffee (with coconut milk, only fat) in the morning.
And of course that’s still the norm today. I’ve worked on ranches and have my own small farm. Morning chore are done before the first cup of coffee. The animals will be fed before the people.
Prior to eating carni I ate three times a day like most people and snacked in between. Now I’m so satisfied for so long that I just have no appetite early in the morning. I can get on my tractor and cut pastures till late in the day before I feel the need to eat.
As far as any research showing that breakfast is important I would have to question the source since so much “research” these days, as in days past, is skewed by monies payed to fund them by big ag and big pharma.
I deleted so much a few times but I always made my comment not short again. I just give up at this point.
Many people need an early breakfast. Some wake up early, many can’t eat right away so they eat later (my SO is like this, he eats at 6-7am)… I eat when I get hungry or when I get tempted I NEVER force-feed myself (that would require a tremendous amount of self-control and probably would need to break my personality or something) just like I never starve myself or leave myself hungry or resist temptation. Or deny my body food when it wants it without a good reason. That wouldn’t end well.
My coffee doesn’t count, no matter how much egg and cream is in it. Liquid things feel quite differently for me.
(I really should quit already… It’s weird, the IDEA of coffee is too tempting. And I realize the real thing isn’t even as good, usually. Sometimes it’s great. And it does no good to me.)
Good idea. But even if science itself would bring this result, I would know that science is flawed (if it says it’s true for everyone) as I obviously shouldn’t ever eat breakfast under normal circumstances. And I met similar people, it’s not uncommon. Though they possibly ate the wrong thing in the morning (moms feeding buttered butter and sugary cocoa to their kids… a friend of mine got sick almost every day but some moms are stubborn) while I tested it with minimal carbs (not out of curiosity as usual, I was tempted, it happened once in a blue moon. hard to tempt me early but possible) and it was just as horrid… Few things can make me regret my eating but a breakfast does it.
We Hungarians have “morning” in the word we use for breakfast and morning ends at 9am at latest (then comes “beforenoon” ), this color my thinking and writing… A meal at 11am is technically breakfast to me as it’s too early for lunch but I don’t talk about these late breakfasts when I express my total passionate hate and repulsion towards breakfasts. Those are “somewhat early morning meals”, before 11am.
I regularly ate at 11am (just a few bites, usually fruits as I normally couldn’t stomach anything else) when I had 3 meals way before keto. No wonder I usually did IF on high-carb too I need an impossibly early meal or a very late one to got out of even a big, 8 hour eating window. And I wasn’t inclined to have a late meal on carbs as I was super satiated then.
But my first true meal always was at 2-3pm (on school-/workdays, weekends and holidays are special) or did I write it before? Even my school lunches were scheduled at that time, it was perfect.
I got that recently in a rather long interview with Dr. Bikman, seemed a serious result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsCb98LVxhg&t=3504s
