Chickens will readily kill and eat small animals like mice. Then the poison is in their system.

Talented chickens!

Well, it means a lot to each of those grand winged ones with their beating hearts, unique ways, and clucky songs. It also balances out the Phyllis story for my heart. All that is priceless! :sparkles:

You might even have some golden eggs happen, I wouldn’t rule it out :joy: :chicken:

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure @ctviggen was saying poison isn’t an option for him because of the effect it would have on the creatures that meat the mice…

Bob have a look on YouTube, there’s loads on there. You’d need to have lots of places the birds could run for cover when they see a threat, and ideally a rooster to guard them and alert to threats too.

This is why we never put out poison for mice. My orange girl hunts mice and (partially) eats her prey. I didn’t know chickens could catch mice but we don’t set out poison because of my hunter kitty so no worries there.

We try to be good stewards of our land and do not spray pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides on the land. I enjoy my lightening bug show every summer. We plant marigolds as a deterrent to the bugs. Works a bit. Not as good as chemicals but I accept the trade off.

Yes, we lose some of our crops to bugs… but now they feed our chickens!

We do have our house sprayed twice a year or we would be infested with all kinds of creepy crawly things. I would prefer we didn’t have to… but we live in the Deep South where insects will take over and rule if not kept at bay!!!

I don’t know. My post was to alert anyone thinking of having chickens that they absolutely will kill and eat mice, so don’t use poison. Also, snakes, insects, and other small creatures.

Anything that moves (or not) is potentially chicken food :joy:
