Oh I am so angry

(Wenchie) #1

Right, I need to rant and I hope you excuse me and support me.

I just went to donate blood. I do that regularly since many years. My veins are not great, never have been great and taking blood from me has never been easy.

So you have to talk with a doctor first who noticed my weightloss compared to what I had 10 weeks ago and she asked what I do. Given my iron was low she raised some concern about my diet (of course) causing low iron! Whaaaat? I eat red meat, liver, spinach and what have you. But she insisted cutting out carbs will have me missing “important nutritions” omg… it went down from there. Of course the nurse was stuggeling getting my blood which lead to a discussion of how cutting carbs out will make my veins loose :flushed::flushed: this is not my crazy grandma talking but medical stuff basically bullying me for my diet.

I also got explained that we need carbs to survive as humans have been eating carbs at all times. What the actual f… I argued that the cave men had hadly exes to carbs ut lived on fatty meats. Noooooo! Not true. I also mentiones the people in the Arctic areas who don’t use carbs at all but live on oil and fish… Noooo! They don’t exist. I also mentioned my university degree in Biochemistry and that carbs are not essential… no chance

At the end of the day, I am black and blue all over, the got my blood taken but asked me to not donate blood anymore until I got my needed carbs back.

I am in rage! Thanks for letting me rant :triumph::triumph:

Where the hell are you at? They stick a needle in my arm and drain blood and give me some OJ for the road, rarely talk to anyone for more than 5 seconds, especially not a doctor.

(Wenchie) #3

In Germany that is the common procedure. A doctor needs to give his aproval after a check.

(David) #4

Sooooo many misinformed medical staff spouting their incorrect facts, myths, and opinions all backed up by the fact they have a white coat.

If it wasn’t so ludicrous I’d be angry too.

“Please don’t donate blood until you start eating carbs again?”

shakes head*

(eat more) #5

all of that is ridiculous but especially THIS!

eat how we say or you can’t help others?
it’s ok to eat candy bars/cookies/processed food and donate blood but not low carb…lame!

i would still go and if they ask…you’re “eating a balanced diet” they can just assume it is carb heavy and not what is actually balanced for you

(Wenchie) #6

It wasn’t “please don’t…” at all. She said I am not allowed! :flushed: I asked her how she plans on finding that out? When she sees me having gaines my 30+ pounds back? She said she will be able to tell because I will be missing glucose in my blood :see_no_evil:

I am angry because this misinformation harms people. And if I hadn’t such a great comunity and the knowledge I have from Richard and Carl they might have made me insecure about what I am doing.

(Wenchie) #7

Ja I thought that too and then again I am so stubborn that I feel like I should stand for what I believe in and what is right!

But probably much easier to not discuss things :pensive:

And ja… I got offered cake, candy bars, sweet Joghurt, Banana and Coke… so healthy :triumph::grimacing:

(Andrew Anderson) #8

Sounds like they “practice” medicine and willy nilly make up nutrition. Red M&Ms cause cancer, never swallow bubblegum and carb free blood is dangerous! Seriously, sorry for your experience.

(Wenchie) #9

Hahaha cool :joy: Thank you for your response. Made laugh at least :joy:

(Joseph) #10

And oreos are more addicting than heroin.

(Wenchie) #11

Well to be honest… :joy::joy:

Honestly. That is quite the biggest load of crap I have heard surrounding this diet. There are so many naysayers when it comes to this WOE/WOL. My mom recently saw the new’s report about coconut oil and how it is bad for you and blah blah blah blah. Love my mom to death, I really do, but people will believe anything they hear on the TV or read on the internet. I’ve had a couple people tell me in the last few days that I NEED carbs to survive and that your brain needs carbs to run. I just laugh at the ignorance now. So far this diet has been amazing and I love the results so far.

(Arlene) #13

It’s time to stop giving blood. You’re low in iron anyway. Why do you feel you need to give blood?

(KCKO, KCFO 🥥) #14

Ah silly me, I thought lack of glucose in your blood was a great thing.

Sorry you had to put up with all that. I’d look for another dr. and find out about the low iron thing. Maybe it isn’t true. If you are eating red meats and spinach as well, you should have a good iron content.

Maybe you shouldn’t give blood until you get the iron thing sorted out, if it is in fact a thing

  1. Try getting more sunshine to build hemoglobin.

  2. My veins are stable, and I’ve never been stuck more than once. I’ve sworn to myself though never to let it go past two misses from the same tech. It represents incompetency, and says they will keep on chewing up my arm as long as I let them.

Funny isn’t it how a couple of incompetents stood around telling you how wrong you are about diet?

(Lauren) #16

Cause it saves lives?

#17

I’m one of those types that is really hard to get a vein when drawing blood. This was before keto, and continues into today. It has nothing to do with keto…my veins are hard to get to…period.

I always warn them when I need to draw blood…I tell them that it is difficult for the “normal” technician. I have also rejected technicians, right before they tried to stick me with a needle. I watch what they do…if they look like a novice at it, I tell them to stop and request for someone else.

(Karen Parrott) #18

Ugh!!! When I was 70 pounds overweight, it was It was easy to draw my blood because the fat anchored my rolling veins. When I lost 70 pounds I have to tell the phlebotomist to anchor my veins so it doesn’t roll away from the needle when I get my blood drawn

This is even more essential if I donate blood since the size of the needle is bigger than say a butterfly needle for a simple tube or two

I would return and ask them to use a more solid technique or provide a different And more experienced phlebotomist for you. If they ask you about your diet, I would tell them that it is nutritionally adequate for you and your doctor agrees.

Good luck and I have learned to stop talking to medical professionals who are yanking my chain. I look them right in the eye and tell them how I expect to be treated, and I let them know that I am also a medical professional myself.

Sorry this happened. There are simple and easy test to test your iron requirements just before a donation unit is drawn. They should’ve just run that test and said yes or no based on the outcome of the test and their criteria for cut off

(Wenchie) #19

Oh ok, well what I am angry about is not my Iron or my veins. I always had bad veins and I donate blood since about 15 years. Why? Well… thats a very personal thing but to say the least: because its the right thing to do and it saves lifes. Maybe the life of someone you love…

However I am also not concerned about my iron. There is a minimum amount of Iron you need to have or they will not let you. And I was above that. My iron is lower than others, but not low enough to donate blood. So aaaaallll ok there. Plus at my last doctors check I was told that we need to take care of it and I am taking Iron supliment since then. Its just the stupidity in claiming that a diet where you simply cut out carbs causes you to miss iron (especially with all the red meat)

My point was how people who are doctors and medical professionals spread lies and bully people. Saying carbs are essential or lowering carbs in you diet causes your veins to become loose. My point is that someone who might not have a comunity like this and read every book out there might have been kicked of the horse. Not every obese person has tons of selfworth and trust in what they are doing.

(Wenchie) #20

I am sorry but why? Becaue I have a blue arm or met some twats? Sure not… a lot of people need blood and I am in perfect medical condition to do so. Giving blood saves lifes! And we need people to do it. Plus its healthy for the donor as well.

I will not stop doing the right thing and helping others because some people acted shitty…
