Off plan eating? Carbs aren’t the real problem!

We mostly all eat off plan sometimes, some of us more than others! Sure we’re all avoiding carbs and keeping them low to be in ketosis. You don’t want the hangover, low energy, water weight or cravings that could follow depending on how much and your tolerance and ability to bounce back. But it is after all something you recover from and move forward.

No shame just get back in the game. No big deal.

What I think we should consider and this is my problem with eating in restaurants isn’t a carb hit. It’s the vegetable oil. Many studies link omega 6 polyunsaturated fats to colorectal and breast cancers. When you eat carbs they are gone from your body in a day or two. When you eat industrially processed vegetable oil and it incorporates into your cell structures in can be in your body up to 7 years.

These cells do not function or replicate properly and can lead to cancer mutations. I have already had cancer and although I beat it with surgery and didn’t need chemotherapy I would hope I can avoid cancer occurring again elsewhere in my body by keeping vegetable oil out as much as possible. So if you’re craving an off plan meal (cheat as some like to say) consider making it yourself and avoiding the toxic vegetable oils.

This is another reason I don’t love eating out and we keep it to a minimum, maybe twice a month.

I eat out a lot! I eat out with my mum, lunch with the ladies and, less frequently, out in the evening! I cook for friends, they cook for me!
I totally get what you are saying, but I live on my own and eating and drinking(less these days), is embedded in my social life. This WOE has to work for me! I desperately try to make the best choices I can, and I eat at fairly good places, and fairly regularly so the staff know me! I try and avoid fried or processed things. Stick mainly to salads, fish, freshly made burgers etc. But I do worry sometimes.

@CrackerJax I wasn’t trying to be judgmental towards anybody’s choices, only make folks aware. I wish I had more of a social life, you’re fortunate and I’m sure do your best to have a balance between that and your health. For me, on the rare occasions that I eat out I’m more concerned about oils than a carb hit now.

I truly didn’t think you were being judgmental! I honestly share your worries. I just do the best I can and enjoy the social occasions!

Another point that I neglected is how omega 6 becomes part of your skin structure. I am on immunosuppressive drugs and have been warned about sun exposure and an increased danger of melanoma. Sunscreens are highly recommended. But I have also read many posts by fair skinned people who got sunburnt even thinking about going out in it! In essence after 6 months of keto with very low omega 6 consumption they were shocked to find they could be in the sun for way more time without getting burnt. So that’s another motivation for me. :cowboy_hat_face:

Yes I have heard about this. I am always very careful in the sun as I burn easily, but come to think about it when I went to Australia in February, I didn’t burn at all! Which is rare!
I heard Gary Fettke talk about how it takes 4 years to rid the body of inferior cells built out of omega 6 oils. And that foetuses can also be affected! It really is scary stuff☹

I dove into the rabbit hole that is omega 6: I’ve eliminated all nuts from my diet (histamine intolerance+low oxalate), I don’t eat seeds and use only fruit oils, so home is safe. Whenever I go to restaurants (which isn’t often due to my histamine intolerance), I select the foods where I can control ingredients - no dressings on salads (only EVOO and vinegar) and no sauces (cream, “natural”, mayo-based (flour, starch, seed oils). I don’t know what the cook uses, so I “pretend” they don’t exist there

I choose to unwind a little and try not to worry too much-knowledge is power but, at the same, it can cripple you.

I’m definitely going to start taking a little bottle of my own dressing when I go out! I already take my own salt!

The link isn’t working David. I’ve tried to do a search on the study but keep coming up with “This site can’t be reached…”. My knee jerk reaction is that big food is using hackers to hide studies that damage their reputation.

(Full Metal KETO AF) #11

@CarlKeller Sorry Carl, I just checked it and it works fine on my iPhone.

The link is now working for me. Thanks David.

I totally get the “off road” path. We are mainly keto but decisions need to be made about which carbs to indulge in when we want to be more relaxed. We have been keto/low carb for almost 2 years now and we are less stressed about the odd time when we might eat something that is more carby than normal. We make the decision based upon how non-processed the food is and it works for us. Luckily we don’t experience much in the way of any kind of rebound effect. We are making choices for the long term and as long as the old carb ways don’t become everyday life then we feel we are on the right path for us.

We love Indian food and dine out at our local most weeks, the issue, of course, is what oils they use. I think it’s Ricebran oil. (Edit: We ask for shredded cabbage instead of rice. Our Indian restaurant is really great in accommodating our ‘special long grain rice’ request. lol!)

There are so many ways to be caught out in the modern world, the other day I was sent a link about the issue of Triclosan in products and how they are potentially linked to osteoporosis in women.

lol I spent the years I was raising a family wishing I had FAR LESS of a social life, as I had to have one because, children. Now an empty nester and a social recluse and I freaking LOVE IT

I had my social life cut short with an autistic child and then more so after a leg amputation at 39, 20 years ago. Also lost some friends when I got cancer, and ended up on home dialysis every night. I have been alone 95% of that time with an autistic son as my main human interaction. I have learned to embrace my solitude but I miss having several friends that I saw regularly. I was a musician in another life and had lots of social activity.

Just know if cancer does return, and only 1 in 1,000 don’t have to deal with it in some form, eating ketogenically, fasting, and doing your best to remove carcinogens from your environment is always your best bet:

(Full Metal KETO AF) #17

@Dipper_Actual Fortunately mine won’t come back, my kidney was removed 13 years ago. :cowboy_hat_face:

By genius photographer O. Winston Link. I have a copy of it hanging in my house among others of his.

But ya I get that it’s not for everyone. I’d hang out with you if we lived close by, I think you’re keen af

Cancer is always happening, just doesn’t get past immune surveillance usually. Once it’s got a lock on all the hallmarks, that’s when it finds its legs and grows big enough for us to notice, in the macro.

You have a lot of friends here
